help: change root from ext2 to ext3
Hi, I change my root partition from ext2 to ext3 using "tune2fs -j /dev/hda5" but SUSE keep mounting the root as ext2: it gives a warning at boot time XT2-fs warning (device hda5): ext2_fill_super: mounting ext3 filesystem as ext2 Does anybody know how to force SUSE mount the root partition as ext3? I've never used tune2fs so I don't know what it does but did you check fstab? The filesystem should be mounted as whatever fstab says it is (if it is that). Brana
Thanks. I specify ext3 in /etc/fstab but initrd still
mount the root as ext2. I use the kernel come with
SUSE. I don't want to compile a custom kernel, too
many options.

It's probably a good idea to post the related lines of your /etc/fstab and perhaps the results of $ mount as well so that people can see it... -- - E - on SUSE 9.1 | blackbox 0.70b2 | Panasonic CF-L1 Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP | copperwalls was here ;) "Look! Did you update the initrd? I'm guessing that the appropriate module hasn't been loaded. David -- Registered Linux User No 207521 at The Linux Counter http://counter.li.org/ “The above is my personal opinion and does not necessarily reflect that of the little voices in my head.”

In file '/etc/sysconfig/kernel' make sure ext3 is listed; for example: INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs ext3" then run mk_initrd. Perhaps this will do the trick. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Almost there, for ext3 one will need jbd also. Thus the line should look like: INITRD_MODULES="reiserfs jbd ext3" Charles -- I've run DOOM more in the last few days than I have the last few months. I just love debugging ;-) (Linus Torvalds)

¡AHHHH! ¡Gotcha! That is why I was getting this error during boot, and which I hadn't bothered yet to look it up (I recently changed root to ext3 from reiser): <4>JBD: barrier-based sync failed on hdb6 - disabling barriers You never go to sleep without learning something new. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
