Dear friends, I feel good to share with you that I am holding a demonstration cum presentation about network install of SuSE Linux - in about 7 hrs from now. The work shall be done with SL 8.0 as this is the version which has gcc-3x [working] but also working java. Till probably 8.2 fixes the things.. This shall be done by creating a local mirror for ftp.suse.com [done already] for i386 architecture. IIT Bombay is arguably India's no-1 engineering training institute. The demonstration shall be held in presence of Head, Computer centre IIT Bombay as well as a few professors from the department of computer sciences. Also shall be present the system administrators for each of the twleve hostels on which the responsibility lies to take care of LAN spread over a campus housing more than 3000 high end [personal] computers connected to network. So far, RedHat has enjoyed a monopoly due to inertia or lack of awareness on the side of campus residents. The stock installation on machines sold within campus is also Red Hat - for the primary reason that Red Hat's ISO images are available freely [anyone listening?]. It shall hopefully change now. As the campus enjoys a robust and high bandwidth lan, and people have been convinced to continue updating the mirror, we can assume that SuSE shall have a home in many hearts at IIT in the time to come. I estimate that about 3000 people shall be exposed to SuSE and shall have the freedom to choose with minimal effort for the first time. Last night - the test-run succeeded and install over HTTP went fine. The most impressive features were speed of install of default system [network is fast], the concept of having a network server giving out files [network installs have been unheard of - in spite of having a good LAN], the ease of installing new software/updating machine [By choosing from the list of un-installed software through yast], the eye-candy [really fantastic visuals of 8.0] KDE3.0, and not having to look for installation CDs or firing up installation-tool using keyboard. One click installations really took the cake. Wish me luck, I am sure I am going to face some questions there :) If you want to say something to me, please eliminate [SLE] from the subject line.
