[SuSE Linux] 30 or 72 pins??? / Sound Card
THANKS TO ALL FOR THE INFO!!!! The next time I turn off my system :), I'll check which chip I have. I'm betting that it's the 30 pin. Also, it looks like I'll be going for the Creative SB 16 ISA sound card. Just to let you'all know, I can't afford a new computer so I'm doing a major upgrade of this one. I'm adding the max amount RAM, a new HD (around 6Gb), new video card, sound card, and either a zip 100MB or LS-120 ex disk drive. Then I'll have to wait 2 - 3 years before I can talk my wife into a new computer :). Thanks again! Make the right move, and upgrade your motherboard and cpu while you are at it. For $150 you can get a pc-100 motherboard with an AMD k6 300 processor. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

I am running a three year old P166 Sony VAIO. I made the same decision that you did and jacked the RAM to 64MB and added a Western Digital 6.4 GB HD. It gave me three new 2GB partitions and is much faster than my older HDs. I also upgraded to an EXTERNAL 56Kb Zoom V90 Modem. The extra RAM and Additional HD made a new machine out of my old one. I expect the 2.2.x kernel to give me 2 to 5 times more speed than I have now with the 2.0.36 kernel. That should hold me for another 2-3 years. By that time the commodity computer will be a 1GHz box with 256MB RAM and 32GB HD. By then I should have a cable modem. Really? The improvements in 2.2.x are that great? How so, and in what respects? You seem to be saying that you expect this improvement in addition to whatever speed-up you've obtained from the h/w upgrades. Yes, I do, based on information I read at www.kernel.org, and from reports on the maillist by those who have upgraded to 2.2.x. I understand, of course, that milage may vary.

I have noticed that performance "seems" to have a quicker response time with the new kernel. For instance when I do an operation in Midnight Commander, the scrolling speed thru files is noticably faster, things apperar to "pop to the screen" quicker. The same is true with starting X, windows seem to "pop open" quicker, and X itself starts up faster. I know this is totally subjective, but it is noticable.

I didn't change a thing in my keyboard rate. It even boots faster, the boot messages fly by. :-)

I am so amazed at how much these people DON'T know. Why do they pick an app such as staroffice and discount everything else. Robert "I taught at Stanford" Cringely displays his resume on his website. It used to include the claim that he "taught at Stanford University". Someone checked at Stanford and discovered that he was a lab assistant there for a short period of time. Cringely seems to make a living by promoting desention, as he bragged on his PBS special, "Nerds 101", or by playing favorites. He is not a programmer, and he has no training in science or math. FUDing for M$ doesn't seem to be beneath him. One might ask if anything was beneath him if money is involved. It is quite obvious that he appears to be "knowledgable" only to those who are not. I cant help but put my 2cts in here. I would very seriously price out *everything* before you make a decision. The ram if new will probably cost 120 used 50 and the most youll get is 32ram 4x8 Your system bios may not be able to handle a large drive... then your talking about a firmware bios upgrade for 50 and even at that rate the performance wont be that great.Alot of the performance will be from the bus on the system board Ive toyed around with upgrades untill I realised its just not at all practical. My old *good* ;-) system is a ps1 investor that has 8 ram bays that I filled with 4 m simms for 50 a bios upgrade 50- a cpu from I think 33 to 66 ws about 40 or so, a new video card that never seemed to work rite.A 5g hd that never accessed properly. (it now has a 500m with dos win3.1 and suse) In other words yes.. it runs well for a machine its age but by all standards (todays) it isnt worth much other than for experimenting with. Im not knocking your budgeting but really just trying to give you & hopefully your wife <g> something to think about. Ask yourself... what would the resale value of this be? Of course you wouldnt get your money back.. but what percentage would you get back? I see your from Germany... Im from the US so Im not sure what the prices are but something to think about before you invest any money. my 2cts best regards rob Linux Home page <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A> -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
