Hi all, I ran a series of security updates (those in red) in update software through Control Center/YaSTe modules/Software/OnLine updates. I cannot remember all the updates but one was a KDE update. KMail will not open. Other KDE apps like Konqueror work fine. I am using Evolution to type this. I run SuSE Pro 9.2 Thanks in advance for any help. I am very much a newbie, so if you would, please give detailed instructions rather than think I know what you are suggesting. Many thanks, Andy

Have you restarted X after the updates? If not, do so and try again. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery

Look in $HOME/.xsession-errors immediately after a failed attempt to launch KMail. There may be diagnostics there that shed some light on what's going wrong. If they're there and they allow you solve the problem, great. If they're there but don't help you, post them here so someone who might understand them can try to resolve the problem.

Carl, I looked in Find Files for $HOME/ .xsession-errors in both "bin" and "/" as well as file:home/andy and got "0 files found" each try. I did restart before (or I thought I did) BUT this time I totally shut down for a while, restarted, tried to start KMail again, and got: "KDE Inut could not launch 'kmail'". Any ideas? Thank you, Andy

Hi Andy, First, can you please 'trim' your quotes? Assuming everything's installed in the default locations, open a terminal (Programs > System > Terminal > Terminal) and issue "/opt/kde3/bin/kmail &". You're bypassing the menu system and launching it from the command line so you want to look for any error messages it gives you for clues. As for finding .xsession-errors, it lives in '/home/andy'. Just use the Konqueror browser, select 'show hidden files' under 'View' and locate the file. You can click on it to read it, too. - Carl -- _______________________________________________________________________ C. E. Does this help? What does "rpm -qa | grep kde" give you? You didn't by any chance 'update' a package to a newer package of the original version after updating versions did you? -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871

As I'd suspected, you've managed to somehow get into a situation where your libraries and not all of compatible versions or are not compatible with the application (KMail) which is using them. This is pretty odd and definitely not normal. What version of KMail did you install or to which version did you update? From what on-line source did that update originate? As a single reference point, I'm running KMail 1.7.2 under KDE 3.3.2 Level "a" and the symbol mentioned in the diagnostic you quote is also absent from my .../libmailprivate.so.0. My libmailprivate does reference a close variant of that symbol: v mine: _ZN11KMainWindow7setIconERK7QPixmap yours: _ZN11KMailWindow7setIconERK7QPixmap ^ It looks like a minor renaming occurred. I'd suggest uninstalling KMail and re-installing it. I'd hope that would repopulate all the pertinent libraries and fix this problem.

This part isn't relevant since you followed Carl's other suggestion and ran KMail from the command line.

I don't really know how it happened but my Kmail works again. I went to install and remove software through YaST typed in kmail and no results. Typed in Kontact and got 168kb lib file to install. I did and Kmail works. i won't look the gift horse in the mouth. Many thanks to all you guys who helped. I really appreciate the effort you all put in on this list. Andy
Andy, I've got to run now. There are a lot of really sharp people on this list like Randall to help you sort this out. I want to mention before leaving that you should also be investigating how an update done with YOU would break KMail. That isn't normal. There are lots of questions to be followed up in that area, too. So good luck troubleshooting and I'll catch up by reading the details later. - Carl -- _______________________________________________________________________ C. E. Hi Andy, Did you restart X?: - Log out of your KDE session. - At the greeter, Ctl+Alt+F1, then log in as root - Type "init 3" (no quotes) for run level 3 which shuts down X - Type "init 5" for run level 5 to restart X - At the greeter, Ctl+Alt+F1 and logout root - Ctl+Alt+F7 and log in as yourself again (normal user.) Try this and report back. cu, Carl -- _______________________________________________________________________ C. E. Actually, the process of logging out effects a restart of the whole X subsystem.

Thanks for sharing that Randall. Twice. ;-) Doesn't my sequence work, though? I mean, under normal circumstances I don't do that whole routine, but it seems to work often enough when a normal logging out and back in hassn't. Am I the only one who's had that experience? - Carl -- _______________________________________________________________________ C. E.
