Can anyone point me to a resource that explains the role of various processes? at the moment I am interested in kamp-idled.But I'd want to learn about others as well. thanks. GB

The Linux Kernel source code :) Sorry, this is the only source of information I know for these.

kapm-idled is always running, if your kernel has nothing else to do. This way it conserves energy on most CPUs, by constantly running the "HLT" instruction, which puts the processor in a powersave mode.
