Hi, I find that one of the most annoying thing about mozilla is the way a "search box" opens up everytime you type in a URL, asking you to search some search engine for the URL. To me it's just a "flickering annoyance". When I want to search, I'll enter a search URL,.....sheeesh. :-) Anyways, I finally played with it, and figured out how to stop it. Go to /home/username/.mozilla/user(default or yourname)/********.slt/prefs.js Change the following line to "", like so: user_pref("browser.search.defaultengine", ""); Don't just comment out the line, or it will default to netscape.search -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Hmm I think that this is my no 1 top feature in Mozilla. -- Cheers, Jeroen

Yeah, to each their own, but at least you have a choice. I think mozilla should have a preference checkbox to turn this on or off. My little tip simulates that "turning it off". I think it is in there, to "encourage" people to search thru netscape(default), ....just another one of their little tricks to get people to their site. Oh well, I thank God that Mozilla and Netscape are separate development lines. It really is sad to see the way netscape forces you to their sites to view ads. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation

Which version of Moz are you using? I have 1.3 on this machine and you can turn the search engine thing off under smart browsing / location bar autocomplete advanced / uncheck "show internet search engine" And, if you type "about:config" in the browser, you can probably turn off the searchengine thingy under browser.search.defaultengine Unless I'm misunderstanding your original message .. sjb

Thanks, that was it. It sure is buried down in those prefs. :-) -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
