Hi, I've compiled and install my own kernel for as long as I can remember, but I would like to try out SuSE's own, modular, 2.4.7 kernel. I look on their site and on the ftp site, and in the books, but I don't see any instructions on how to upgrade a SuSE kernel 'their way'. If anyone knows of such a document, please give a link. I tried upgrading the kernel version on a VMWare SuSE session, and it wouldn't boot :/, good thing that's why I was testing it there.
The way I do it is utilising yast 1, either download kernel from update section of ftp.suse.com or mirror through yast or as a seperate download. I usually do the yast way through package management, then install packages from relative directory or ftp site; as you exit, yast runs SuSEconfig which installs and compiles kernel. Once this is done in a konsole screen "mk_initrd" then "lilo" and your new SuSE kernel shall work, well maybe, but for your kernel update 2.4.7 which is SuSE 7.2 there is a module "reiserfs," if you use it, that needs to be added to the rc.config before "mk_initrd". I have found yast works great with SuSE specific created kernels or self created kernels from SuSE source. What is not always clear is that you do need to have the latest version of modutils when you update a kernel. Slightly confusing is that a new version of the kernel does not always imply a new version of modutils. I was thinking of writing a short step-by-step guide on how I do this, which may or may not be interesting. I have a strong interest in kernel development so I tend to keep both vanilla and post-SuSE hacked versions of the sources... -- Regards Cliff
