I have been having trouble with SuSE 9.0 and from reading the list so have others. My desktop grinds to a halt with the CPU running at 90 to 100% and frantic paging out to swap.
I thought it was a problem with X and ACPI but running top shows that it is kdeinit consuming all the resources.
This can go on for 5 minutes with the swap partition filling up and up until it eventually stops. I have not yet found a reproducible situation but it seems to be happening all the time and I cannot get any work done.
Hello Nick,
You didn't say what version of KDE you are running, also if you recently upgrade KDE.
However, doing a little googling on "kdeinit" suggests that removing /tmp and renaming your /home/'nick"/.kde directory and letting KDE create you a new one, or doing the standard .mcop, etc kde "clean-up" which has been discussed numerous times on this list might help. Hope this helps,
Friendly greetings, Gar
Thanks for the reply Gar I did as you suggested and things seem better, well I got rid of /tmp and renamed my .kde directory. Not getting the horrible HD grinding. Just for my information what are the .mcop and other kde clean ups? Any links?
Nick
Curtis Rey had a nice write up on removing .mcop after installing a new version of KDE, however I can't find it now. The suggestion for removing /tmp came from (my own experience) and: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-kde/2003-Mar/0126.html HTH Gar __________________________________________________________________ McAfee VirusScan Online from the Netscape Network.
