I am looking for a book that someone could recommend, and has used, that would help with a migration from a Windows server platform to linux. Preferably Suse if possible. I have seen several books (ie "Window to Linux" etc...) that cover the topic but would like to get some feed back from those currently taking on this task or have completed this task. Thanks,
We are slowly moving stuff to linux but Never used that kind of book (I prefer books like Unix Power Tools from O'Reilly, more useful). For me, the method, if there is one, is basically the same for all kind of migration: - make a checklist of the applications that run on your windows server - check whether they run on linux (I suppose they do if you want to move). Should they not run, check whether you can fin an equivalent in FOSS world. Not all the servers can be moved: suppose you use MicrosoftApplication Server Pages (actually I remember reading that there is a module of apache that allow them to run, but I never tested it) - setup a testing environment - after the test, move in production If you have more detailed question, ... It is worth trying Novells site they have something on migrating from NT running right now. http://www.novell.com/linux/windowstolinux/ I know it is not a book but in combination with one of the box you have it may give you some ideas, also you can ask them for a step by step guide or something like that. Good luck. George --- Aaron Bridge <a.bridge@insightbb.com> wrote:

I think I have just installed samba in SuSE 9.1 and am not having any success seeing SuSE from my Windows XP Pro machines. My fileserver is Novell 5.00.09 and I'd like to start migrating stuff to the SuSE machine so it can become my fileserver. I think I have followed the instructions properly but I have obviously missed something. Can anyone suggest some easy-to-follow setup documentation for me please? TIA Mike

Make sure you have the samba-doc rpm loaded. There are lots of examples and step-by-step walk throughs from the authors. Should be in /usr/share/doc/packages/samba. All the samba books are there in pdf and html. Stan
