According to the config files in 7.1 ( /opt/kde2/share/config/SuSE/config/kdmrc ) there is an option "ConsoleMode=/sbin/init 3" that should be located under the "[KDM]" entry.
The key words here being "config files in 7.1" ? My system is 6.4. Which maybe explains the absence of the "ConsoleMode="-line in my kdmrc...? No?
Works on my machine - KDE 2.1 beta 2
- -tosi
Or is it the KDE version which decides? (mine is 2.0)
Did you try editing the file via root and kde's control central?
launch kcontrol->system->login manager, under session you should be able to set who is allowed to do what
Naturally I did this as root. In fact kdmrc is so restricted, that only root can even read it ;-) Something puzzles me though - kcontrol shows different settings when opened from my regular user-account, than when opened from root...? The option ConsoleMode f.x. shows /sbin/init 2 as seen from the root-account, but /sbin/init 3 as a regular user. The option is there, yes, but changing settings doesn't have any effect. But, Juergen you got it! That's EXACTLY what I'm after - a non-X init level, as a choice in KDM... It would, IMHO, be pretty cool. So what's this about feedback@suse.com ? This is where you go with ideas for features and stuff? But now, it seems, that this functinality is already included since 7.* ? So there seems little point in writing feedback@suse with this? Question remains: How do I do it on my 6.4 system?

No idea how and wether it works. I also noticed KDE2 been mentioned. I am behind im many things recently developed. My system runs -fine now with 7.0 / KDE1- and I realy do not dare to update to 2.4.x, KDE2, Xfree 4.x. Maybe a fresh install with 7.2. I do not think it will harm posting that fo feedback@suse.de (or com), this is the address for feedback and suggestions of all sort. they usually do not answer, but they listen. We always see suggestions from people appear in further distros. If this is to implement with a few lines in a current distro, the it even means less work. ;-) Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
Does anyone know if this is possible in KDE 1+? I only use KDM and very occ KFM I felt no need to upgrade to 2+. Cheers Francesco
