[opensuse] driver for Canon Color imageCLASS MF733Cdw driver
Sorry, somehow I got this message linked to another. Also, my distribution is OpenSUSELeap 4.3 as opposed to 4.2 referenced. I have purchased a Canon Color imageCLASS MF733Cdw laser printer for my OpenSUSELeap 4.2 distribution. 1. Using YAST/hardware/printer/add, I get No connections, try 'Detect More' message. 2. A Canon MF731C/733C UFRII is found at the IP address I assigned. 3. Under 'Find and Assign a Driver' the message no matching driver found is presented. At the Canon site I found a driver for linux linux-UFRII-drv-v350-usen.tar.gz I could find nothing under opensuse search tool that matched. If this is appropriate, how to I install the above tar file? I hope this description is complete enough. I have a 10-year old Canon MX7600 that absolutely didn't have Linux support. I had to resort to using VirtualBox with Windows as a guest to use the Canon drivers for printing/scanning. I still need Windows for the income tax preparation software too. Bummer. Thanks for all of your help. I will search details more. I asked Canon for support and received: : "This Linux driver package provided on Canon's website "UFR II/UFRII LT Printer Driver for Linux V3.50 includes code components that were not written by Canon USA or its affiliates. In addition, Linux exists in many different versions, and the driver cannot be tested against all of them. Thus, Canon USA is not able to provide a support program for this driver software." I also had assumed that Canon printers would be best at printing some sort of photos, though I have read that laser printers are not optimum for that. another reason I switched to hp printers, ink jets are part of the replaceable cartridges. I was using too much ink clearing the jets in other printers, and sometimes junking the printer because I could not clear the jet :( not a problem with hp printers, at least doesn't require replacing the printer. and hplip covers all my printers, wireless and wired. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Typical. Actually, not too typical: they at least do consider Linux and provide a driver. Or perhaps they only host the driver and somebody else writes it. Maybe Canon Asia but not Canon USA.

I do not buy Canon stuff precisely for this. I had a printer that failed to work well under Linux, I had to buy third party drivers from "TurboPrint". Cheap and good purchase, I must say - but that was over a decade ago. Purists say that laser printers are bad for photos. I use a laser printer for photos, precisely because ink jet clog too often. I can forget that I have a laser printer, it is always ready even if I don't use it for a month. Hit print, wait a minute for it to heat up, then it prints perfectly what I ask. Even photos: I fail to see the problem. Mine is an HP cp1515n. Uses something they call colorspheres technology. No idea what it really is, but it works :-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I am still trying to understand how to get multifunction color laser printer and scanner connected to my opensuse 14.3 installation. I have searched all of the names for printers and scanners that appear under YAST, compared them to devices offered on Amazon, and cannot make a closure. Finally I discovered the HP Developers site: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/in... and found a HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP m477 Fnw listed that according to this list has full support, Print capability, Scan capability and Fax capability (though it just says "Send" for FAX). It requires version 3.15.11 of HPLIP. It also requires a proprietary HPLIP Binary Plug-In it says for scanning capability. I currently have three HPLIP packages, all version 3.16.11-1.3, one for printer, another for scanner and another for fax. Does this mean that, given I download the required Binary Plug-In, that this 'all in one' should work? I have gone through many pages without any resolution comparable to what I feel is presented here. HPLIP is open source. You can install from opensuse repositories or you can just download and install directly from HP. HP's source tends to be more up to date, which is important if you need a plugin. The current version on HP's site is Version: 3.18.3. HPLIP in turn will download any binary plugin(s) you need, as you connect each printer to it, and put them in the proper place, so you don't even have to figure out what to do with them. One HPLIP install per computer is all you need. If you get a all-in-one printer/scanner/fax it all talks to the same hplip on your compute. If you get a couple more HP printers, such as a lazer, it too talks to that same copy of HPLIP. You don't need three hplip packages. You don't have to version chase HPLIP packages. IINBDFI. I guess. buy at amazon and a set of cartridges is more than the printer including shipping. and a duty cycle of 50,000 pages. I would call this *overkill* unless you really print that much. I have an HP Officejet Pro 8620 which is inkjet but has 30,000 duty cycle and full set of cartridges from HP, regular color and high yield black, is only us$107. and my photo prints are very good and quite stable if you take proper precautions. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I haven't looked recently at prices, but in my case they were expensive but not that expensive. And they last years.

Yes, I never understood the rationale for citing a high duty cycle as a reason NOT to buy. So what if you never approach that. It just lasts longer. It all comes down to Cost of printer and cost to operate. Another great printer was the hp laserjet pro P1606dn. (B+W only, No longer made). This printer was under $200 when it came out, and they just wouldn't die. People are now asking $500-ish for new ones from left over stock, although esupplybox.com still has them for 220-ish. Suddenly the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP m477 Fnw ($380-ish) doesn't seem so expensive. (I'd spring for the FDN model which has fully automatic duplex printing for $20 more) HP had to discontinue the P1606dn because they were killing sales of business class lasers. Cheap enough to put one on everybody's desk. And in small office environments everyone was pushing them beyond their duty cycle with zero problems. Having one printer that does it all and delivers gorgeous color prints as well as 28ppm dual side printing makes sense. And Brand X toner (V4INK) is available for under $120 for all 4 toner cartridges - less than half the HP price. Black only cartridge (the one you will use the most) is Under $45, less than a single ink-jet cartridge for my current all-in-one. So I'm thinking I might buy one of these to replace two printers. Especially if Don Fisher reports good results with Linux. -- After all is said and done, more is said than done.

Thanks. Amazon says it was available in 2015, so I did not consider it new. But??? Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am still confused by the documentation. The Linux Foundation Open Printing site: http://www.openprinting.org/driver/hplip/
Does not list the HP Laser Jet Pro M477fdw in their supported printers list.
But the HP developers site: https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/in...
does list it. How does one know what to trust.
hp provides the linux drivers for their supported printers. in my experience, they are good and work well.
openprinting only reports their experience and what users report to them. searching their site for my "HP Officejet Pro 8620" provides:
Comments For basic printing functionality use the HPIJS driver . For advanced functionality such as printer status, maintenance features, scanning and photo card unload use the HPLIP driver (which includes HPIJS). Consumables/Refills: 4 cartridges: one for each color of CMYK. Also 4 replaceable printheads.

if you really consider the situation, hp provides good drivers. why should openprinting waste their time and efforts duplicating a project. it would only take time away from developing a driver for an currently unsupported printer. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet freenode -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, maybe because it is not supported by cups directly, but needs the hplip software. Or maybe because simply no one has reported on it. It is curious, yes. Anyway, if hplip says they support it, they do and you are covered. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)
