later kernel and IBM Ultracam
Hello, people, can you help me? R W Pearson wrote:

In any case, as others have pointed out, you have to keep your software up to date. I regularly check for changes at ftp.suse.com by running diff(1)s once a week against their /pub/ls-Ral.txt file. I keep two on my system, one ls-lRals.txt.OLD the other the most current.
I have a T21 Thinkpad, with the Ultracam so I can keep in touch with family and friends. It came with W2k, and I've put SuSE 7.3 on it. I'm slowly working through getting replacements for all my Windows apps so I can work in (and thus learn more quickly about) Linux. I have read that later than 7.3 stock kernels (2.4.10+) have the ultracam.o module working in them. I haven't yet figured out getting the ultracam driver compiled for the stock kernel (I've been busy moving to New Zealand). How difficult, and how useful, is moving to a later kernel? Does it come with the driver source files configured to compile? I can successfully recompile a kernel - I'm not so sharp at adding in new source - not so sure about the structure in Linux land yet. I talked my father through getting SuSE to recognize and configure his "old" btt48 video capture board and camera in 7.3 (I made sure he had the same as me so I could support him), and he has a color picture now. I need to get a working camera on my system so I can go on and figure out how to use GnomeMeeting. Then I won't have to boot W2k much anymore, and I can concentrate on learning Linux. Thanks in advance for any help. regards, Bret
