In SuSE 9.1, Yast launches OK but when I click on [Install and Remove Software] that screen comes up for a split second and then disappears. What might cause that? TIA Mike

I switched off some source directories and it started working again. I haven't done it yet but I should switch them back on one at a time to determine which one (or more?) has the dud content. IMHO Yast needs to generate an error rather than just going away. Mike

IMHO Yast needs to generate an error rather than just going away. In X, any reported errors should be logged in ~/.X.err.

Maybe things changed; I'm on SUSE 9.1 (similarly to the OP!), and I have no user having such a file in her/his home folder. But I have e.g. ~/.xsession-errors Pelibali

.X.err is created when you log in in text mode and use "startx" to launch the X server. .xsession-errors is used when you log in through the graphical environment

I had the same on 9.1 with an earlier version of the ulb-gnome reposi- tory I mirrored for myself. That time the culprit were the curl and curl-devel packages. When I removed them, YaST2 could "digest" that particular folder as well... Pelibali

YaST will generate quite a few messages, both errors and otherwise, in /var/log/YaST2/y2log But in general, as it sounds like yast sw_install is crashing badly, it is difficult to generate error messages when you experience a crash. In some cases you can do what e.g. KDE does and install a general signal handler for some common crashes, like segmentation fault, but sometimes the crash is too severe
