[SLE] How to get current display from HP-UX to Linux remotely?
Hello Linux folkz, I'm trying to do remote control of HP-UX workstations with HP4071A parametric testers from Linux box. Could somebody tell me please how I can see the operator's terminal on HP-UX box with currently open application over the network. I'm not talking about just remotely exporting display and launch graphical application from HP-UX. I need to see current terminal the operator is working on. I want to be able to interact with operator's terminal on HP-UX tester and correct operator's mistakes if nessesary. Could somebody clarify me the way how to achieve this. Thanks in advance. From what I guess from your description, you want to see the *same* dektop and his moves with the mouse. You want the ability to take over control if nessesarry.
The VNC tool should allow that. I know about versions for Mac's, PC (linux Win NT, 95, 98, 2000) but am not sure wether there is a server for HP-UX. The website in question is http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc Have a look... Juergen

Hello Juergen and SuSE folkz, Thanks for your response. I was thinking about VNC too. I'm using VNC server on WinNT and viewer on Linux at work. Unfortunately I couldn't find VNC server package for HP-UX. I found VNC package for Sun Solaris but I'm not sure will it work HP-UX or not. I can't experiment with production equipment in our facility because it could cost us a lot of troubles. I need to know for sure will VNC Sun Solaris version work with HP-UX or not. I hope that somebody on this list can answer this question. Thank you in advance. Alex On Sat, 09 Sep 2000, juergen.braukmann@ruhr-west.de wrote:

oh sh*t, i will regret that. What version of HP-UX? I got a HP9000 with 10.20 here. Other options are to ask the VNC mailing list. There seem to be a lot of experimenting folks about. Btw. I tried to compile VNC on an experimental linux box and failed, since some unknown package wasn't installed. Never found out which. ;-( But I didn't try hard. Never the less I'd try on my HP-UX. But I am incapable of squeezing the source. ;-( Juergen -- =========================================== __ _ Juergen Braukmann juergen.braukmann@gmx.de| -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ===========================================_\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Are you serious? HP-UX and Solaris run on different hardware platforms. Solaris binary package cannot run on HP-UX.
Thank you in advance. Alex

Ok, unless I am completely mistaken (not the first nor the last time, to be sure), VNC is NOT what you are looking for. VNC, other than on Windows, doesn't easily (if at all) let you remote control someone's desktop. On M$, it has to since there aren't really provisions for multiple displays on Win32 like there is in *nix. But on a *nix machine, it will open the first _available_ display or one that you specify. But trying to get it open an existing display would be the same as running X on tty7, and (at least in linux) doing a Cntrl-Alt-F2 to get to tty2 console, and typing startx. It just doesn't work. You have to do startx -- :1 , so you are opening tty8, or the next available display. I think what you are looking for is something like either x2x (which is included on the SuSE boxed set CD's) or XmX (X protocol multiplexor). These programs are designed to allow clients to either watch an X display from another computer, or to actually interact w/ it. But AFAIK, in both cases, they do allow the users to 'share' one desktop. Monte __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo!
