tar'ing up /home/ directories for restoring

I'm looking at making my workstation mount /home from the server. I want to move everything in my current /home/monte directory over. I was planning on doing something along the lines of archiving it w/ tar, so I have a backup saved also. What is the proper syntax for getting *all* the files in a user's home directory, recursively, and maintaining the permissions, links, etc.? Thanks, Monte

tar cfzvp myhomedir.tar.gz /home/monte -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. P. J.

I suggest heading to Freshmeat. A simple search of " backup " yeilds 150 solutions. IE. http://freshmeat.net/search/?site=Freshmeat&q=backup§ion=projects -- W.D.McKinney (Dee) (907)349-4308 (Office) (907)349-2226 (Fax) http://3519098920
