[SuSE Linux] Difference between German and English?
Hi all, I was just wondering, what is the difference between the German and international (English) versions of SuSE? Of course, I know that the manual is in German in the German version, bot does it differ from the international version in other ways? The reason I am asking, is that I was thinking of buying the German version of 6.0. If the difference is just the manual, I can't see why I should wait for the international to come out, since I understand German quite well. But if there are other differences, I would probably stay with the international version. One main difference: The German version contains all that crypto stuff like ssh, cipe and so on. Because we are exporting from the USA, we have to respect the US export laws which do not allow exporting crypto software. Way too expensive. People are not willing to pay the same price for shipment they are already paying for the product. Understandable ;-) The only solution would be to have two international versions: One for the USA and one for the free world. I hope so. At present, non-German-speaking users are in effect required to be US users in practice. The unfortunate accident of being an Anglophone resident outside the USA should not lead to even more deprivation than necessary; not forgetting the many users of minority native languages (French, Italian, Latin-American ... ) for whom an English SuSE may be easier to get along with than a German one. I know that. And I really don't like this situation. But maintaining a third release adds lots of work to us. There are much more important tasks to do (eg the AXP port) than paying for some stupid US laws. And by the way: People who need cryptography have internet access. The packages are not that huge, and they are provided for download from a free server in the free world (ftp.suse.de) ;-) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

I hope you will consider doing that in the future. Hmm. What exactly ARE the differences between the German end the English releases of SuSE Linux? Why? Is it more expensive to ship from Germany than from the States? Btw. I'm distributing the international version in Denmark, and I get it from Germany. I don't think it is expense we are talking about her. The US has funky import/export laws and then there is the whole crypto/encryption regulations. The US also has a tariff tax but I am not sure how applicable that is to software. I am not up on my trade laws.... Jeri On Thu, 10 Dec 1998, Kaare Rasmussen wrote:

Export, yes. But as I know it's not illegal to import encryption software to the US. It is legal to import encryption into the states - illegal to export w/o a license. There are other issues as well, such as patents etc. There was something in the news a week or so ago - 35 other countries have agreed to make it illegal to export cryptographic software. This might include yours!
