[opensuse] Follow-Up my Desperate Situation
Since it seems not to be able to read from SuSE DVD installation kit any more, how can I install from the network ? Maybe my current installation, enriched/spoilt by the many on-line updates, is preventing CrossOver from working on his own as I have unistalled wine. Please, refresh my mind about avoiding reformatting/covering the /home partition ... although I have bckups ... It's a lot of work to get R and JGR etc ... working again. Should I re-enable he on-line updates from the repositories ? If the answer is "YES" than which repositories are SAFE ? I would restart from a clean installation anyway. God knows how many patches have been added in the meantime ... Thank you, Maura Maura Edelweiss M. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Four repos: DVD, oss, non-oss, and update. Don't use the redirector (http://download.opensuse.org/); choose a working mirror and stick to it.
I would restart from a clean installation anyway.
No need.
God knows how many patches have been added in the meantime ...
rpm knows too. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. WHat are the right steps for adding on-line updates from the repositories you named. In Yast I clicked on Software Repository and saw the onesyou suggested but the it asks me to choose a scanning protocol (ftp, HTTP, etc...) I do not know which one is best. I picked ftp and the it asked me directory, server, etc.. I cannot fill up these fields as I have no clue what to write. Anyway, following your advice I could finally instll CrossOver and also Windows MS Office. I have to work on my presentation and complete some analysis in 9 days ... WHat can I do to improve my confiburation file ? I did not change it from the default. Thank you so much. Best regards, Maura --- "Carlos E. R." <robin.listas@telefonica.net> wrote:

I would use the Online Update Configuration to add the update repository, and the Community Repositories to add ONLY the oss and non-oss repositories at this time, until things are working better again. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have them all under "software repositories". - -- Cheers, Carlos E. They are there after configuration. I was just suggesting to use the semi automatic ways as I figure she is stressed right now, and the easier the better. But after seeing Benji Weber's email about the redirector being down, those may no longer work for her now. So much for easier. In that case, I would add them via URL, and go to each directory on a local mirror, and copy and paste the URL from the location field of the browser, give it an appropriate name in the Yast module, and she should be able to fairly easily get those repos going. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah, I see. I forgot that method, because I don't like it much.

I did recomend her earlier not to use the redirector, but choose a good mirror and stick to it. I find that more "stable". - -- Cheers, Carlos E. http://www.opensuse.org/ ---> download --> Mirror List: <http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version> Search you country, find a repo. For instance, <http://ftp5.gwdg.de/> (Göttingen) is well known. You will need two links: Installation Repository: Addon-NonOSS-Installation Repository: If you navigate the repo, you will find the update repo too very easily. For instance: http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/ http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/10.3/repo/non-oss/ http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/update/10.3/ Another one: http://suse.bifi.unizar.es/opensuse/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/ http://suse.bifi.unizar.es/opensuse/distribution/10.3/repo/non-oss/ http://suse.bifi.unizar.es/opensuse/update/10.3/ and so on. ftp, http... does not matter, as long as the repo you choose has the same type. Just enter the url (bottom choice, I think). (the above are http types; the directory starts with /pub.... etc; the server is the name before the first slash, like "suse.bifi.unizar.es")
Anyway, following your advice I could finally instll CrossOver and also Windows MS Office.
Good. :-)
I have to work on my presentation and complete some analysis in 9 days ...
WHat can I do to improve my confiburation file ? I did not change it from the default.
Hold on, if MSO is already working, don't touch any thing ;-) Well, I already told you the steps... briefly, but others have explained it here in long detail. There is a good manual, and the wiki surely explains it. There are many details, I can't cover them all in an email, I'm sure to forget something. Otherwise... simply edit the file and add the glx entry like in mine: Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "extmod" Load "glx" EndSection It _might_ work. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Ok, Maura..it's obvious that you've got yourself twisted in circles.... I've been in this situation myself, and it's frustrating, because you end up doing lots of effort, but not getting good results. This adds to your frustration, because nothing else is getting done...and each time you re-do what you did before...the chances of skipping a step or forgetting to adjust a setting increase with each repitition. My advice...(as a systems admin for 12 years, and a *nix user for 24 years now).... 1. WRITE DOWN A PLAN on some paper, with full details of EXACTLY what you are going to do. Number this plan "#1" 2. Go do something else for a 1 to 3 hours. If you get an idea... write it on a Post-It note and attach it to the plan you 3. Look at your plan again... 3a If there were any notes from step #2...re-write the plan with your reminder notes put into the plan and go back to step 2. Number the revised plan "#2", "#3", etc. as appropriate. KEEP your previous plans. 3b If there were no notes from step #2 go do something for 1-2 hours again. 4. At the end of the day, go home and get some sleep. 5. In the morning, review the latest version of your plan one last time 6. Put your plan into action. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
