mouse problems OS 15.3, KDE 5.76, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti
Hello, since two days (may since last updates?) I have strange problems with my mouse: it doesn't move smoothly, it's as it makes little pauses and then jumps to a next position. Or, when I resize a window dragging a corner, focus suddenly jumps to the window below. I changed the battery of my logitech wireless mouse, no change. So I changed mouse and USB-receiver for another mouse/receiver of the same model - same problems. All worked perfect until yesterday or the day before. It is not all the time, it started after some hours uptime, using gimp and digikam at the same time. I logged out and in again, but no change now. There is not much processor nor memory use according to gkrellm. temperatures are low. It's an intel i9 with 64mb memory. For what can I search (and where?) for hints for the problem, or does anybody have the same problem and knows what to do? -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

Reboot? :-? Try different desktop? Anything "strange" in the logs? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from openSUSE 15.3 (Legolas))

I plugged the receiver of the mouse to another USB-plug, and since then it works normal (knock on wood)... I couldn't find anything in the logs, but this doesn't mean a lot, as I didn't really know what to look for... Before, rebooting didn't help. This morning it was so terrible that I almost wasn't able to point an icon because the mouse-cursor didn't move and then suddenly jumped to another position... I wonder a bit, because this is a very new machine, and the mouse-receiver had been plugged in the same plug since beginning and worked until few days ago... So, for the moment it seems solved... -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

jfyi: I have a new dell XPS 8950 and if I plug the mouse-receiver into the rear of the box, I have problems moving the mouse similar to a very low battery. move the receiver to front of the box and no problems. ?? -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

Get a cat?
your attributes are incorrect. I did not post that, and your post is not at all helpful, only contributes to non-essential extra traffic. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

Meh... worth cutting a little slack on the weekend. It's not like this list is that busy anymore anyway. A far cry from the 200-300 posts per-day in the old days. :) It's heartening to see how many of the old folks are still around, even if they are talking about cats. Contact or distance problem. The USB-socket may be faulty. Plug in and remove the receiver a few times, that should clean the electrical contacts. Distance: Plug the receiver into a USB-extension cord which is connected to the rear USB-socket hold it close to the mouse and check whether the problem persists when the mouse is moved. I have a trackball mouse, the ball has to be occasionally taken out and the ball seat cleaned. Peter

I too and same problem with dust/mites...

yes, and the usb-receiver is also and the usb plug on computer. possibly an rf blockage/interference. fwiw, no usb port on rear of the computer works satisfactory, but front does. and other usb devices work fine from rear ports. only problem with mouse. tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

Are the ports on the back on a different hub from those on the front, maybe? Might even be a different driver.

In my case all are on the back, it's a tower. The difference I can see is that the one that stopped working is red, USB 3.2 (I guess), while the one that I use now is blue, USB 3.0 (I guess). So there is a difference. What confuses me is that the mouse-receiver worked on the red port since beginning (for approx. 3 month), but stopped working a few days ago, and now only works on a blue one... -- Daniel Bauer photographer Basel Málaga https://www.patreon.com/danielbauer https://www.daniel-bauer.com

that would suggest a driver change/problem ?? or a hardware failure ... -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA @ptilopteri http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member facebook/ptilopteri Photos: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/piwigo paka @ IRCnet oftc

Agreed, Dating myself, but it took a while for USB3 to catch up to handle all the peripherals on USB2. For a couple of years, mouse hardware specifically recommended staying with USB2 for the problems described. The USB3 driver finally fixed all that. However, it isn't out of the question that there has been some type of regression or new bug introduced in the latest version of the 3.2 driver. Would be worth a couple of searches on "<your mouse type> USB3 problem" and just see if there is any history that may point in the right direction. If it is a new OOPS in the driver, the commit responsible will have to be tracked down. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
