Yes. Thanks for the other responses too, some convincing. I really appreciate the time you have given me. What I want to do is the downgrade. Is there a way? Using 11.0 is not an option. I guess you could use the RPMs from the 11.0 distribution.. But you may end up with a dependancy hell.. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Why not? I don't think the kernel ABI is drastically different between the 11.0 and 11.1 kernels, so you should be able upgrade the kernel easily enough. Then for other non-gui packages, I would think you could just upgrade them from the 11.1 repositories. Then, either use 11.1 with the entire X and more recompiled from the 11.0 sources, or use 11.0 with everything you need from 11.1 recompiled from source. I wouldn't like being in your shoes. I'd stick to 11.0, yes or yes. If 11.0 is not an option, then the option is the previous answer, ie, 11.0, like it or not. >:-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Create a build service project that builds vs 11.1 but links all the xorg-* packages from the openSUSE:11.0 project. Then either install those specific 7.3 versions (the lazy way) or create yourself a product with your older xorgs using info linked from this blog (the right way). http://lizards.opensuse.org/2009/02/11/product-creation-with-the-opensuse- build-service/ Will -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Something in 11.1 makes the ATI driver unusable. It's not the ATI driver because under 11.0 it works just fine. Yes, and the intel driver (at least for old chips) is crap like hell. I don't think that's true but in saying it you gave me the answer to my Intel problem. An old rage 32Mb card works fine and much faster than the NoAccel intel. You have to unscrew the mounting bracket to get it into a Dell. A riva tnt works fine too. ebay has them for $10. I didn't know you could use cards with intel video. If you still want to delve deeper into replacing X by building it yourself, you can start with: http://www.3111skyline.com/linux/intel-LinuxDriver.php It will provide a roadmap for you. As far as an rpm downgrade is concerned, I don't know what X releases are available for 11.1, but if there are sets of, say, 7.4 rpms and 7.3 rpms, a direct replacement shouldn't be that difficult at all. I did a similar downgrade from 7.3 to 7.2 on 10.3 without any issues. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Thanks for thinking about me. Coincidentally, the bug was fixed in todays opensuse xorg update. The Intel driver now works correctly. L. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Is the reason you ask because you were happy with the way 11.0 worked, but not with the way 11.1 works? Do you use one of the video chips that has had problematic drivers lately, such as Intel? If yes to both, just reinstall 11.0, and if there's something important and newer in 11.1, try to get just that from build service or compile it yourself. I recently built a new server for myself. I put it into service over a month after 11.1 was released. It uses 11.0. I have many systems and many operating system installations still working. Largely I have them to test new releases while in alpha and beta, and this goes back to before Novell made openSUSE out of SuSE. This provides insight on whether to skip using a release for production purposes. That insight lead me to skip 9.x, 10.1, 10.3 & 11.1 so far. Understand though that what works best for me isn't necessarily the same for everyone else. In the future, don't replace your old OS. Instead, add it. / only needs a small fraction of the space available on modern HDs, so you can have more than one and still have plenty space for data. That way, if the latest blows, you just don't use it, but stick with the old until the next release provides another chance for better. -- "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up."
