[opensuse] problem writing/blanking a DVD
I want to write new data to a DVD+RW. The drive can read the existing content of the disk OK but when I try to blank it I get an error: # wodim dev=/dev/scd0 blank=all Device type : Removable CD-ROM Version : 5 Response Format: 2 Capabilities : Vendor_info : 'TSSTcorp' Identification : 'CDDVDW SN-S083C ' Revision : 'SB01' Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW. Using generic SCSI-3/mmc DVD-R(W) driver (mmc_mdvd). Driver flags : SWABAUDIO BURNFREE Supported modes: PACKET SAO Speed set to 5540 KB/s Starting to write CD/DVD at speed 4.0 in real BLANK mode for single session. Last chance to quit, starting real write in 0 seconds. Operation starts. Error: this media does not support blanking, ignoring. This drive or media does not support the 'BLANK media' command wodim: Cannot blank disk, aborting. I also get the same error using blank=fast, FWIW. The drive is capable of writing to DVD+RW as far as I know e.g. http://www.burn4free.com/toshiba-samsung-storage-technology-corporation/tsst... I'm a bit worried by "Device seems to be: Generic mmc2 DVD-R/DVD-RW" but I don't fully understand what that means; I'm not a CD/DVD expert. Oh, it's opensuse 11.2. Does anybody have any ideas? The way I read the wodim man page, blank is for -RW media, not +RW. Conversely, format is only for +RW media. Did you try using K3B instead of wodim directly? It's been a while, but IIRC, I had that problem trying to use the K3B version normally installed with KDE4, but running a KDE3 desktop. Do you have a KDE3/KDE4 mixed desktop? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. I agree about format, but that is automatic anyway and the DVD already has a mountable filesystem on it so it's clearly been formatted. The wodim manpage only mentions CD-RW in conjunction with blank, so that doesn't tell me much. The brasero help mentions CD-RW, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

No, I started by trying brasero but I can't make it do anything. It doesn't seem to recognize the disk/drive. I used to use K3B a long time ago but have had problems with it in more recent times. I prefer to use the underlying command line tools, especially when I'm having trouble. It's easier to see what's going wrong.

That machine runs a gnome desktop but I'm running these commands via X/ssh from an icewm desktop. I don't run KDE at all. Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What happens if you use dvd+rw-format to blank the disc? When I burn using K3B, I don't bother blanking any more, I just tell it to overwrite the disc. That is somethign else you might try. Well, it's already formatted, so I wasn't keen to do it again.

Thanks for that hint. So without blanking I just tried: wodim dev=/dev/scd0 -v -speed=2 -data my.iso and it worked! Thanks, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
