[opensuse] Has anyone else had problems with 2.6.34 kernel?
My machine simply refuses to boot with the 2.6.34 kernel (and I'm running recent hardware - dual core 2.8GHz E6300 Pentium, 4GB Ram). I use 2.6.33-27 (locally compiled) and it works fine. I upgrade to 2.6.34-47 (or any other variant) and get grub, followed by a black screen and no disk activity. The only thing that works then is power-off or reset. :-(. I've tried all the oS variants of the kernel as well as locally compiling it using the existing (working) kernel config (after running make oldconfig, of course). Just doesn't work, so I'm stuck with 2.6.33 at the moment. How does one file a bug report when the machine doesn't even get far enough to give any error messages? -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

One boots with vga=normal, possibly with a serial console for capturing the output. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (12.8°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

OK - I'll give it a go and see if I get anything useful. -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Might it be the problem described in http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse- kernel/2010-06/msg00033.html ? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Possibly, but I'm not even getting a kernel panic message - it doesn't even seem to be getting that far. Nevertheless, I'll wait a few days and see if the next update fixes it. Just to let you know. I got the same Problem here on openSUSE 11.1 with the 2.6.34-49.1-default with an old Asus A7N8x-delux. I'm getting Grub, but then only a black screen with no other activity I will now test if i can boot from the 11.3RC1 Installations DVD ... Michael

I wonder if a file system driver that was previously built into the kernel has now been switched to a module and not included in initramfs? I might have to try to dig a little deeper (next month, though, because this month is a write- off being end-of-financial-year and all that...) -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Same thing here with kernel 2.6.35rc3.2.1 :-( Michael -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

2.6.35-rc3 has a couple of severe bugs. Linus is on vacation and the fixes for them don't get merged unless he's back. As a rule of thumb, don't install any early -rc without having joined and read lkml for quite a while. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
