Printer problems, zip, and installing software problems
Dear All, I have been using Linux-Mandrake since 7, but had some instability problems with 9 so decided to try Suse8. Except for the problems I am presenting I like Suse 8 very much so far. My printer, a HP 940c worked fine at first then stopped printing and I have not been able to get it going since. I was able to delete my cups then reinstall the printer through the control center. It did a test page just fine but when I tried to print from any application it would not print. When I tried to use ./spadmin in Open Office to set up my printer I got this error message: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified /opt/OpenOffice.org641_en/program/spadmin.bin: cannot open display ":0.0" Please check your "DISPLAY" environment variable as well as the permissions to access that display. (See "man X" resp. "man xhost" for details) Then my external parallel port Iomega zip drive did not get configured. Linux-Mandrake 9 automatically configured that for me so I do not know what to do to get it configured correctly with Suse8. I did find some instructions about it but they did not work, in fact only crashed my system and then I had to reinstall Suse. This morning I downloaded realplayer 8, tried to install and got the error message below: ./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified Error: Can't open display: :0.0 I am new to Suse but not to Linux Mandrake however these problems are stumping me. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am running an Athlon XP 1600+, 512 megs of memory, 60 gig harddrive, via 8233 chipset with onboard video and sound. Thanks, Marcia

If you use sux instead of just su in order to become root then you will be able to execute X programs while logged in as a normal user. Give this a try and if you have more issues then keep the email coming. :) -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. I tell you what you should see.
