This mornig I realized computer slowdown and unusual hard disk activity. Running top showed that there is a process called "update-status" that uses high percentage of CPU and may cause the slowdown:

Is this a system program or does belong to some other program? And how can I disable it?

It's the online update system with libzypp, rug, zmd etc.. that causes this. Have you updated to the latest version of ZYPP and it's libs?
