Hi, I am trying out SuSe 5.3 and the default user wm seems to be kde. I am not impressed and would like to switch it to something else. Where can I do this and would anyone suggest a wm that works well in suse. Ice and blackbox are ugly but fast, and resource friendly. I've tried just about all of them, but always wind up with my old buddies, WindowMaker and Enlightenment. You can set your wm in your .xinitrc or set a global variable in profile to a universal default. There are so many wms now, and it all seems to come down to taste which one you use. if you are gonna use the graphical login, i'd suggest using kdm instead of xdm. kdm will allow you to choose which wm you want to run each time you login...very nice. kde is the default, btw. -derek - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

First I recommend fvwm95 for ease of use and familar features of windoze. second about hw to change it. I will need to know what init level you are running at most of the time (2 or 3) and what command you are using to start the xserver (xinit or startx or xdm or kdm). If you email with that info I will help you change your wm. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

When using kdm, klick session type, choose another windowmanager from the list. When using xdm, I think the standard choice is fvwm. If your tendencies are to clean desktops, might I suggest UDE. It's a fast, simple window manager that doesn't use any special libraries, like Qt, and similar to 'lwm', doesn't leave icons on the desktop. It's control panel is unique, and the authors declare it's as different from MS-Windows as possible. I struggled with bloated susewm and fvwm2 for a while and never got them to feel right. I liked WindowMaker in the past, but its focus-follows-mouse mode is still buggy. So I uninstalled susewm and all the WMs and installed the icewm RPMs. Took 15 minutes to set up, looks decent, no frills, always works. Though I still dream of setting up E. :) Just one new SuSE 5.3 user's experience. - Scott Rick Knebel wrote:
