[opensuse] grub and the march of the penguins
When I boot the pc, I have noticed that I don't always get the same background in Grub. Most of the times it's a standard opensuse green background, a bit boring but with stylish gradients. But sometimes I get cute little animated pinguins in an antarctic landscape. It looks like a level from pingus (you know, the lemmings clone). After reading menu.lst, I think that gfxmenu is taking care of the background. I'm curious why it isn't always the same. -- Amedee -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Lol, thanks, that explains a lot. But there must be a random generator involved too? Because if I reboot x times, I only see the penguins 1 time and x-1 times I see the boring green stuff. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes there is a random generator. There is also a key you can press, not sure if it was Caps Lock or something to trigger it ;) Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The things you learn here! I haven't rebooted this machine since I installed this edition of Linux, AFAIK, so I've never even seen this "Easter egg"! If you put it to sleep instead of powering down it resumes the session after powering up, so in that way you have one long session of uptime, even if you shut down the PC each night. It also saves you time, since a resume costs less time than a fresh reboot. Reboot is necessary only after a kernel upgrade. Arent they cute? :) You can "cheat" grub to always display it. Its been on this list a few times. Make a search for it... -- /Rikard Johnels

It's a little easter egg that's been around a while. IIRC, the probability that the christmas scene is displayed instead of the normal boot screen increases the closer you get to christmas Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And it spikes (the probality, that is) at Dec, 6. Which is very, very much appreciated by my family. We don't live in Germany, and so we are pretty much out-of-the-loop for Nikolausi.
