Do the following: as root: init s install the nvida drivers init 5 Basically this shuts the system down to single user mode which does not have the graphical interface running. You can then install the nvidia drivers because the xserver is not running. The init 5 will put the system back into full multiuser mode and the xserver will be running. NOTE: this will log you out. Hi, ' Normally, i have no problem with kernel updates and re installing my nvidia driver, but this time is quite the problem.
i have "wget" the latest nvidia driver, init 3, but when i go to sh install it, i keep getting an xserver is running. i checked tty1-8 and the only one that has anything resembling an xserver is 7. but you cannot kill it!!!! it is a blue screen, and says "the x server is now disabled" (which would mean to the average person, that there is no xserver running, correct?) restart gdm when it is configured correctly. then it has an <ok> below that, you cannot click ok, and you also cannot <ctrl> <alt> <bksp> that doesnt work.
is there a way to init 3 all 7 at the same time from wherever you are logged in?
there is a cursor blinking further down the screen, but you cannot move it up to the <ok>........any clues as to where i can go next?
thank you

Hi,
tried as you asked....... I am getting the error message "you appear to be running in run level 1 this may cause problems as devfs is not running" quit install now?
i chose no, and then got another error message " you appear to have an x server running, please exit x before installing"
how in the world can x be running in run level 1????
i tried switching 1-7 and the blue screen saying x is disabled is still there on 7, and i still cannot kill that screen.
hmmmmmmmm...
im stumped.

Interesting, I can see how it might complain about runlevel 1, but I tried it and there was no xserver running (at least that I could see). The only other thing I can think of is to disable the xserver in the services and reboot the system. Try going into yast, system, and disable the xdm. You should then be able to reboot and install the nvidia. If the install goes well you can then enable the xdm and all should be good. Mike Steve Reilly wrote:

You can use level 3 instead, it is multiuser in text mode. Or level 2 if you may have remote users. You can also boot into level 3 directly without editing any thing: just type "3" at the initial grub boot screen. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Do you use lvm? There has been a report that the new mkinird package is broken in that respect and you have to use the old one, but running the mkinird program to update the ramdisk image. See the thread "[SLE] Kernel 2.6.16.21-0.21 issues", from "Moby" for more details. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Yes, I know the new version is broken. SUSE should have posted an update of it by now, but hasn't. Fred -- MickySoft, the ultimate corporate parasite.
