John Q. Public here :-) I confess. I'm the reason Linux isn't ready for prime time. Love Linux Hate Billy G Don't want to use anything M________ I know Winxx pretty well, can do most install and setup stuff there. I have no programming or comp training but I can read pretty well. I've been trying periodically to get SuSE 6.1 to run on my machine ever since it came out. I had a brief rush when I mysteriously was able to print some simple documents but that ability is gone again since I added a few packages from the SuSe CDs. Never been able to get sound, scanner, or zip drive to work. (Read the manual and still have no clue) The Man files are even worse. Sometimes I think that my printing won't work because I have no network setup, it's just me and my box, but what have network and printing to do with each other? I need to print so I go to my tiny Win partition because i know how to install drivers there and presto they work and my printer prints. We John Qs who can't intuitively see how this line touches that line, and drop a link here and there, are lost in Linux still. And it's veeeery frustrating! Sorry to be such a downer but I thought I had the printer thing figured out, but it's still silent over there, and I need some stuff this morning. So it's off to reboot into Win98 so I can prepare for work..... David --- bsh <dk983@freenet.carleton.ca> wrote:

I would venture to ask why no one mentions Lotus Notes...which has a server edition for Linux and I believe they just annouced a client for it as well. I have used Lotus Notes and it is capable of all you have mentioned an much more.
So true just read a great review in "Linux Magazine's" about the Domino/Lotus Notes option, but Linux is still a bit from being John Q Public's desktop.

David, I know exactly what you mean. It is taking me a long time to get that "intuitive" feel for Linux. I know more about what goes on under the hood with Linux, but, in general, Wintel is an easier configuration. I set up an NT server last night in about 5 hours, and that includes hunting down all the latest drivers, and configuring the video, sound, networking, special keyboard, and etc. (Yes this is my "workstation". I do development on NT - switching to Solaris soon, and if the NSA gets that scrubbed Linux finished, perhaps we can go that way.) Part of what made it easy to set up the NT box is that HP has a well developed website designed to integrate with Wintel. It would be cool if hardware vendors would set up a site like this for Linux. One thing we should keep in mind when comparing Linux to Wintel is that the KDE and GNOME are infants compared to Windows. Remember Windows 3.0? I am not tracking GNOME, but the KDE is maturing very nicely. I don't see how MS can compete with OSS and open standards forever. As more and more CS students come through universities with a fully functional Un*x install on the desktop in their dorm room, with all the source exposed, there are going to be more and more Un*x hackers adding to the OSS community. I see a day coming soon when OSS is a primary concentration option in a CS UG or Grad degree. Universities will eventually reclaim what is rightfully theirs. Steve David wrote:

As I always told my engineering physics and calculus students: "Everything is easy once you know how." Your easy install of NT reflects the length of time you've had to become acquainted with it. If you had started out as 'unknowning' about NT as you are about Linux you would have had a more difficult time, if you could have done it at all.
