[opensuse] openSUSE 11.2 download does not install
Hi, I downloaded the openSUSE 11.2, and burned it to a DVD. When I tried to install it, the installer booted off of the DVD, went through most of the configuration, partitioned the harddrive but failed at installing the bootloader. There were 22 files in total that the installer complained that it could not read. I went back and check the md5 checksums. The download MD5 match that posted on the download website. When the DVD was burned to the DVD it was done with K3B. Being suspicious of the DVD I read the data back using both dd and K3B, the md5sums on the readback fils were different. Does this mean that the DVD files did not get burned correctly? Yes, that is what it means. I would burn at a lower speed than the maximum. This is especially true when using "generic" blank DVDs. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Quality of DVD blanks does not generally correlate well to brand names. Generics can be top quality, and brands you might think you could trust often fall short. Read http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm before you buy any more. Any time you experience failures with what you bought, switch to slower speed burning until you run out and can get something better. My last purchase was DVD-R by JVC, a brand I'd never bought previously. I'm about 60% through the spool of 100 with 0 failures so far. Others with very low failure rates were Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. High failure rates have come from Sony, Philips, HP, Memorex, Staples & Office Depot. Last year I was using about 200-300 per month. Now I'm down to probably less than 40/month. -- "Suppos [sic] a nation in some distant region, should take the Bible for their only law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited. . . . Suppose I should have said YMMV since I've never had a problem with recognized brand name media. But, that is just my experience. In any event, burning at a lower speed is indicated. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I currently use Verbatim dvd+r, which is listed in the above link as "1st class". Absolutely no problems, since some years. Hi, First of all, thank you everyone for your helpful input. The disks that I was having trouble with were RiDATA DVD-R. When selecting the Speed to 1.0x and the write mode to DAO explicitly I was able to burn one DVD. However, K3B would report that it was going to use write speed of 2.0x. See below for mediainfo data. I had also tried a Fuji Film disk on all Auto settings and it worked perfectly the firts time. If I recall correctly, speed 1.0 actually needs a different type of media, older (aka obsolete?). See the media info you post:
Current Write Speed: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s Write Speed #0: 4.0x1385=5540KB/s Write Speed #1: 2.0x1385=2770KB/s Speed Descriptor#0: 02/2196143 R@4.1x1385=5730KB/s W@4.0x1385=5540KB/s Speed Descriptor#1: 02/2196143 R@4.1x1385=5730KB/s W@2.0x1385=2770KB/s
Supported speeds for that dvd are 2x and 4x. Anyother setting will revert to one of those two. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
