[SLE] Proftpd 1.2.0pre3 and SuSE 6.2
Hi all I have recently installed SuSE 6.2 and the Proftpd 1.2.0pre3 that came on the CDs.... But I am not able to upload files on my computers from other machines.... even though I can download as many files as I want, or telnet into my computer and delete files...create directories.... Here are some informations for you: 1- I have edited /etc/inetd.conf as following: a) ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/proftpd proftpd as suggested in the help files.....doesn't work :( b) I also tried this way: ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd proftpd It doesn't work :( 2- I have tried to edit /etc/proftpd.conf in order to include some of the <Limit> order .... </LIMIT> arguments with specific IP address and/or host to allow getting into my machine. Rebooting each and every times, trying all the possibilities, didn't produce something good enough... I always get the same message while trying to upload a file from outside to my computer: 200 port command successful 550 "filename": permission denied I don't understand... I have writing permission in these folders with this user (and I also tried with other users....). I cannot upload files on their own HOME directories.... :( I'm on a cable connection, with SMC EtherEZ card, NE2000 compatible. Any help would be reeeeeeeeeeeeally appreciated.... thanks ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Install the newer version 1.2.0pre8 I believe. Fixes LOTS of bugs and works much better. -- Stathy Touloumis, CTO - JASKE.COM 'innovative I/net' JASKE.COM, Inc. 3555 W. Did this work? I have the same problem with Suse 6.2 How did you get the new version of proftp? I tried using YaST to specify ftp.suse.com but it couldn't find the right directories. Alex Miller

Hi Alex You can find proFTP at www.proftpd.org. The archive file is tar.gz and easy to install. You should uninstall the former version of proFTP with YaST before going any further with that... As I wrote earlier today in this list, by upgrading to a new version of profTP, I have been exposed to security bugs, even if AFAIK some bugs had been fixed from the earlier versions... The advice I then received from more experimented users of it was to simply not using proFTP. Instead, you should use SSH or wuftp or simply use in.ftpd (which I actually do). As far as I am concerned, using in.ftpd as FTP service paired with a good configuration of /etc/hosts.allow or /etc/hosts.deny should be OK for basic activities on your system and would give you a good level of security. I hope I'll be corrected if I am wrong, but those are the advices I have received and it seems to be OK. ciao NB (former Ubald Junior) ________________ Nicolas Beaulieu Departement d'economique, Universite Laval Centre de Recherches en Economie et Finances Appliquees (CREFA) Quebec, Canada (418) 626-7184 _________________ http://www.geocities.com/ubald_jr ICQ 15933500 ---> http://www.ccfa.org <--- ---> http://www.ccfc.ca <--- _________________ " La raison fait l'homme, mais c'est le sentiment qui le conduit. Just installed 6.3. When trying to run VMware it keeps giving me an error about kernel module incompatibilities. I ran the vmware_config.pl script but upon rebooting the error re-appears. Do I need to rebuild the binary modules from the source RPMS? Any ideas? Thanks, -- Stathy Touloumis, CTO - JASKE.COM 'innovative I/net' JASKE.COM, Inc. 3555 W.
