It turns out that everything installed fine, I just didn't have my .xinitrc file set up to know how and where to start wmaker from. It built perfectly on my stock, out of the box, SuSE 5.3 box---I think because I don't have automake or autoconf installed, and I didn't mess with libtool 1.2 etc. at all. I did do the aclocal fix (grabbing it from 0.50.0) and everything went fine.
