update => security patches. SuSE (Novell) does not provide updates to the packages via Yast. If you want newer versions of any of the packages and/or kernel then you need to upgrade to 10.1. Lots of people skip some of the versions. Security patches are provided for 2 years and if you are in a secure env. you can run a version basically as long as you want. Personally, I very been working with Ruby on Rails recently. Great dev. env., but it requires post 10.0 versions of Ruby and a few other packages. I definately want to get 10.1 asap. Even more I'm already looking forward to 10.2. The SATA driver (libata) is being drastically overhauled in the mainline kernel currently. That work should be done in time for 10.2 in 6 months. FYI: SATA improvements being worked on: Major overhaul of error handling, graceful speed degradation, PIO support in libata, PATA support in libata, hotplug support, and more I'm sure I'm forgetting. For most of the above it is too late for 2.6.17, but hopefully a lot of this will get into 2.6.18. I doubt it all gets in there. In my opinion, yes......nice improvements in graphics, etc. I did find the order site, (although who ever the dunce who does the web pages for Novell has it buried), and ordered 10.1 today. This has been one of the VERY real problems for SUSE for a long time - before being bought by Novell. They've never known how to do marketing nor web pages when announcing a new product. I too found 10.1 today an have it on order. It was buried like fred says. For a new person looking to get it from Novell they would get discouraged an look for something else if they had to order it from them. Yes, that first page is, put on the side, if you go to products, and software, then in the list along with sles 9 and suse 10 is suse 10.1 I didn't see this though, because I had from the intitial page just launched to amazon ... do a search there, and they offer 10.1 also. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/158298302X/qid=1147465268/sr=8-4/ref=sr_1_4/102-5633078-6142518?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=229534

Holy Mackerel! I just ordered mine (ten days later) and they STILL have it buried like they are ashamed of 10.1. I don't understand. If they want to dissuade people from buying it, why do they offer free shipping? It amazes me that the Novel site in general, and anything to do with SUSE in particular, is so obscure. Don't they ever try to navigate their own site? Don't they ever test it on "naive users"? Don't they ever read forums and public lists to see what real people are saying about the site? Kevin

Yep, and apart from that the wording also states that if one lives in, say, Asia you have to click on the button for Europe but when you get there there are no entries for any Asia locations. In typical Novell manner, the webpage is one big damn mess. Whoever "maintains" (for want of a better word) the site should have a rocket shoved up his/her rectum and set off. Cheers. -- I love work. From there, drop down the "Products & Solutions" list and choose SUSE Linux. Yes, you get 10.0 again, but there is a Pre-order SUSE Linux 10.1 Today! link which takes you to 10.1!

<snip> Yup, good old Digital River strikes again.. I had hoped Novell would get a company to do this type of thing other than them. ( Digital River) As long as I can remember getting an order, much less a pre order page that works as one assumes it would be intended has been an a way to check one's sanity or the control one might have which keeps one from screaming and throwing anything to hand !
Novell's own pages aren't exactly pretty to see, but they do , usually, do the job , you get whatever information you expect.. excluding the recent mislabelling of the link to order the 10.1 box. You were luck, or you live in a "right" place! I've tried to buy the 10.0 from Novel and I was not able to do so. Now i'm trying to pre order 10.1 and i'm still unable to do so. Make sure that you answer ALL Qs when ordering - the one about your Location is the one to watch out for where you are asked about where youlocated and where you want the package to be delivered. READ carefully what comes up on the screen - the way the wording is in that order form from Rivers is abysmal but you CAN get thru it if you pay attention and use some obtuse logic. Also, if you are paying by Mastercard, say, you have to specify your PASSWORD which you now have to use to access your M/Card for online purchases and if you don't have this password then you have to login to your bank's site and setup this password (or ring them up and they will walk you thru on how to do it online).
