[S.u.S.E. Linux] filec
On many UNIX systems, you can enable filec, which fills in the remainder of a filename when you hit the escape key. This doesn't work with the default shell in SuSE. I know that I can use the "*" when enough characters have been entered that the file name is unambiguous, but this is more tedious. Is there an equivalent command in linux for the bsh shell? In 'bash' vi mode (i.e. set -o vi), after entering the first few chars. of a filename, you can hit the TAB key for file completions. If the filename is unique it is expanded o/w on second TAB key it will display all the filenames that match with the string you have entered so far and then you can enter a few more to establish an unique substring of the filename you are interested in and enter TAB key again. This is because the bash shell is not a csh or a tcsh but a bourne shell, so the invocation (and many other things) are different/better:-) ... man bash (searching for "completion" reveals) FIGNORE HOSTFILE completion-query-items disable-completion expand-tilde show-all-if-ambiguous visible-stats complete (TAB) <---- possible-completions insert-completions complete-filename possible-filename-completions complete-username possible-username-completions complete-variable possible-variable-completions complete-hostname possible-hostname-completions complete-command possible-command-completions dynamic-complete-history complete-into-braces -m hostcomplete

This is unrelated. It works in (almost) every other mode and is on by default -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". If you've nothing at all to hide, you must be boring. You may want to take a look at tcsh. Kenneth Tan On Thu, 16 Jul 1998, Alan Riggins wrote:

Doesn't bash complete the file name when you hit the TAB key?

The functions of command line and filename completion seem to be on by default within bash. It uses the <tab> key for completion as soon as sufficient unique characters are reached.Stu - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

`filec' sounds like C-shell, but in Linux you will probably use the bash.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ There's really no need for the insult. I have a number of UNIX and Linux books, but none of them answer this question. If you don't have a clue yourself, why bother sending a message? Obviously this is a C shell feature in UNIX, but it doesn't work in linux. I tend to use long filenames, and use "filec" on a Sun Solaris system. I miss the convenience on my linux system. This seems like a reasonable question to me. I think that's one one of the basic features of any C-Shell (including tcsh) since the midth-80-s.
