Need help with shut down problem
When I either try to log off KDE or do a complete shutdown or restart, my system always hangs just as it's leaving KDE. I get a black screen with my cursor on it and then everything freezes. I can't control-alt-backspace, my cursor doesn't move, my keyboard doesn't work...nothing. The only way to get out is to hit the reset button. Any thoughts on why this is happening? I'm running 9.1 Pro with KDE 3.2.91. BTW, my second system, which is running the same thing, has no problem. Thanks! -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems, Inc. 1.805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com
Hi Tom,
I have had a freeze happen to me when I tried to
adjust some monitor settings that did not quite fall
in the range of allowed values.
This is just a shot in the dark but check your
settings and make sure they are correct.
Good luck.
George

1) Anything in the logs? directory: /var/log/, files: boot.msg, boot.omsg, messages, warn 2) What happens if you boot into runlevel 3, login in textmode, and shutdown? 3) Like 2), but run 'startx' and logout of KDE first before shutting down. Cheers, Leen

How do it do that?
At the boot prompt, just enter the number '3' (no quotes) and hit <Enter>

Locked up. I tried control-alt-F2 and everything locked up. I had to reboot.

Now you confuse me. Did you follow my instructions to boot into runlevel 3? I made a html-page to show what I mean, have a look at: http://cc22149-a.groni1.gr.home.nl/booting/boot.html

I did not do it the way you said. Sorry, I didn't understand what you said. I got your page and will try it tonight.

I didn't have a chance to do the below thought, so I'm not sure if it would have worked. I just upgraded KDE to 3.3 and everything seems to work fine as far as logging out, shutting down, or rebooting. Tom On Tuesday 03 August 2004 11:00 am, Leendert Meyer wrote:

That is the KDE unstable version. Have you tried KDE 3.2.3 og 3.2.92?
Should be more stable.

Thanks! I would suggest that you go to another terminal by depressing the following keys: Ctrl and Alt. Now whilst you have have them depressed

Now enter 'shutdown -r now' to restart the machine. I assume X starts automatically allowing you login as the NON-root user. Again once you have logged in, logout immediately and choose the option in the KDE 'Shutdown' menu to halt the system. OK the message and see if the system shuts down correctly. As a final test switch on the machine and login as NON-root user. Again immediately log off and elect to shut the box down. This should happen without error as any bad shutdown methods would have been cleared when you previously shut the machine down.
