RE: [SLE] kernel modules from 2 kernel versions (now even more sc rewed up)
Well, I think I really screwed things up. YaST showed that the kernel and source available on the SuSE 9.0 FTP was 2.4.21-144-athlon. I still don't know where the 202 and 215 Suse updates for the kernel not the stock one on the distro but installed as part of an update came from. Anyway, I used YaST to update the kernel and source back down to -144. you really need 2.4.21-215 or better to fix a few problems I checked the /usr/src directory and the -144 sources were there and /usr/linux points to them. I also checked /lib/modules and everything is now under the -144 directory. Using YaST, I checked GRUB and it showed that the configuration had just been updated. When I rebooted, I got a kernel panic and a bunch of error messages about reiserfs. Any idea how or if I can fix the problem short of reinstalling everything? depends exactly what the complaints are and what they relate to
Well, I got the problem fixed. Grub was booting a bzImage, but the 2.4.21-144 kernel installed a vmlinuz to boot from. I booted to rescue mode, mounted the root partition and edited Grub to point to vmlinuz and the system booted. 2.4.21-144 is the stock 9.0 kernel. 2.4.21-202 and 2.4.21-215 are security updated kernels that show up in YOU when you have the 2.4.21-144 kernel installed. I updated the kernel and sources to 2.4.21-215 and rebooted. This time it booted fine and showed the running kernel as 2.4.21-215. Only problem is that I've lost 3D acceleration on my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. I'll have to try to fix that tonight. -----Original Message----- From: Scott Thompson Sent: Wednesday, June 02, 2004 4:46 PM To: 'suse-linux-e@suse.com' Subject: RE: [SLE] kernel modules from 2 kernel versions (now even more sc rewed up) That was the problem I was having before. The kernel version was 2.4.21-202, but the /lib/modules/linuxxxxx was 2.4.21-215. Before rebooting, the kernel version was changed to 2.4.21-144 with YaST and the /lib/modules/linuxxxxx was also 2.4.21-144. But, when I rebooted, I got the kernel panic. I'll get the exact error message when I get home and post it. -----Original Message----- From: peter Nikolic [mailto:p.nikolic1@btinternet.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 02, 2004 4:30 PM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] kernel modules from 2 kernel versions (now even more sc rewed up) On Wednesday 02 June 2004 15:10, Scott Thompson wrote: probably incorrect module versions i would guess check /lib/modules/linuxxxxxxx does the xxxxxx or at least one of the tally with the kernel version you want to run..?..

I've rebooted several times, but it still shows that I'm running the 202 kernel. Both uname -r and the KDE control panel show 202.
What is the output from these commands?
rpm -q k_athlon rpm -V k_athlon ls -l /boot cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
