Subject: Re: [SLE] How to make and restore a backup of the whole system?
Hello,
Well Suse has a backup option in yast, but I wouldn;t use it if I were
you.
For your root file system investigate the "dump and restore" commands.
You might want to use these as well for your critical file systems.
You can also use tar (which I was what I use, but you may need to write
a few simple scripts to collect the files you want to be dumped.)
But more importantly you need to make a backup strategy, using
full and incremental dumps on a cyclical basis. If that makes no sense
to you then I think the dump manual page may throw a bit of light on it.
I believe there is a commercially available dump program called "bru",
I know nothing about it, but I refuse to buy software when there is
already software I can use, or adjust to my requirements.
Mmm.. dont know if that helps much. Post again if you have a more specific
need.
Oh yes, you must decide *what* is worth backing up, and that depends
very much on what your system is used for...

Hi,
I have SuSE Linux 7.0 for PPC running on my RS/6000 and I'm not very
skilled on Linux. I have a tape device and I would like to know how to
make a backup of the whole system (or the main part) in the tape.
If I make a backup of the system and after I format the disk, What do I
have to do in order to restore the old system stored in the backup?
Anybody can give me some advices or any website to find information
about this? I've been looking for on the Internet, but uncessfully :-(
Thanks in advance,
Jorge
