[opensuse] suggestion for *mail* backup
I open this thread because it's near the nearly same subject thread about backup, but I never found a good answer. It's easy to backup the hole .mozilla (for example), but restoring it is not (merge problem). what I need is more like mail archive, an html accessible mail storage. I use seamonkey, but kmail or thunderbird may have similar context. Last time I tied to do this (several years ago) I use a html archive progam, but this one didn't know howto archive more than one account at a time. I had to copy all my mails (spread in a handfull of different accounts) in the same box and start from this, the system was far from pleasant and the result not so good. Do you know an archive progam that could scan a mozilla account, read all the (nested) mail folders and build an html tree? thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://clairedodin.voices.com/ http://www.clairedodin.com/ http://claire.dodin.net/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The individual mail "folders" are all in mbox(5) format Having said that, you can restore lost mail by shutting down Mozilla, copying files from your backup into the portion of the .mozilla tree that holds your mail (taking care to *NOT* overwrite any existing files), and then moving files around as you see fit.

UGH! NO! HTML just explodes everything by a factor of 2x to 3x.

Worthwhile problem -- but that's the wrong answer.

I stored mail boxes to a CD, thinking it would be easy to read that old mail directly; but it was not possible, because mbox files are opened in R/W mode. Pity mozilla etc can't be convinced to open them in RO mode if needed. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Could something like unionfs handle this situation? Cheers, Dave -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Perhaps it was a pointer to look it up ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnionFS ...This leads to one other useful purpose for union mounts, which is to make a file system appear as writeable, but without actually allowing writes to change the file system, also known as copy-on-write. This may be desirable when the media is physically read-only, such as in the case of CD-ROMs...

Yes. It is possible to remove attached files from mails, but not all clients can do it. One of the things about CDs is that they can be compressed with zisofs, and compression with mail achieves high compression rates. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. just use mail(1) mail -f /path/to/archived/mboxfile Or just copy the file into /tmp, and play with it there. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

just use mail(1)
mail -f /path/to/archived/mboxfile
No, it doesn't show html and graphics.
Or just copy the file into /tmp, and play with it there.
And that's is more or less what I'm forced to do and what I don't want to. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. What you are looking for is not a backup software but an archive software. You can't use such an archive to restore data. -- Sandy List replies only please! At the end of each month, I just move the contents of the sent-mail folder (and any other folder I want to keep) into a monthly archive folder, e.g. Archives/2008Mar, as I did this morning That also preserves any attachments that I haven't deleted. This serves me well; is there something that it lacks? One could suggest the eg Kmail have a Settings option to keep sent mail in the monthly folder automatically, instead of sent-mail, as is done in at least one other mailer to my knowledge. But that wasn't in the question. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
