Hi, we have a Sony Vaio SRX-77P with Suse 8.1. It works fine, but at the boot you have to put pcirq=acpi (something like that I don't remember) and apic. And everything will work. I was not able to make the special keyboard functions to work, (brightness, etc), suspend, the jogdial and to show the status of the battery in KDE. The rest works, usb, wireless, pcmcia, memory stick, etc. Jose Jerome Lyles wrote:
Anyone here using a Sony Vaio notebook with Suse? I would like to know what problems you've had, if any, with the combination. Thanks Jerome
Hi, SuSE Inc. (SuSE USA in Oakland) had several Sony Vaios. No problems. I still have a super-slim Sony Vaio PCG-Z505HS. With SL 8.2 there's even support for the built-in winmodem with package hsflinmodem (has to be installed manually but it's simple enough). You have to use boot option ide2=0x180,0x386 to be able to install Linux. Two problems I have now: - New in 8.2, worked in 8.0: Sometimes (1 out of 10) when I put the notebook to sleep the screen will freeze and I have to power-off as the only way out. I can live with that but it's certainly not nice. - I cannot use the CD (attached via PCMCIA-IDE card). It's recognized, but when I really try to access /dev/hde (the CD) the system freezes. But I don't need it, I do everything over the network anyway. - Suspend to disk won't work but I don't need it, suspend-to-ram is good enough and I have yet to run out of battery doing it, ever. A half day in suspended mode without power wasn't enough to put a noticable dent into the battery charge... I'm a satisfied user! Mike Jose Sanchez wrote:

Hi Mike .. don't know if you can answer this ;-) I have a Sony U1 (http://www.ottaky.com/vaiou1.php) running Kondara Linux, which is no longer supported and getting a bit long in the tooth. I'd really like to upgrade to SuSE 8.2 but am concerned about ACPI support - I know of at least one U1 that died when ACPI didn't work correctly. Do you know if a fresh 8.2 install is likely to automagically install a working ACPI system? And do you know of any problems with Crusoe CPUs? TIA sjb

No idea. On my Vaio the kernel uses old APM and not ACPI, the boot message says "BIOS too old for ACPI". Mike
