[SLE] Some missing packages in the install CDs/DVD.
Hello, list, In the OpenSuSE project website, this is a Installation Repository and a Addon Installation Repository links in the download page. http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.1/non-oss-inst-source/ I have downloaded the follow CDs and DVD in the download page. SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-i386-CD1.iso SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-i386-CD2.iso SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-i386-CD3.iso SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-i386-CD4.iso SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-i386-CD5.iso SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-Addon-Biarch.iso SUSE-Linux-10.1-GM-DVD-i386.iso I found that the number of packages are equality in CDs and DVD. The number of packages in CDs is 2766 while the other is 2748. And i have check the installation repository The single directory http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.1/inst-source/suse/i586/ contains 5887 packages. Some of them are debuginfo packages, but if we don't count the debuginfo packages, the rest of this single directory is 3877. The result is generated without the addon packages. I wonder what's the different between install CDs/DVD and online installation repository. What's the packages in the online installation repository but don't in the CDs/DVD. Thanks very much. Hi Wang Penghui, My understanding is that the sourcecode for the distribution... in the form of source rpm packages... are provided now only through the online installation repositories or on a separate download DVD .iso; the rationale being that most people don't build and install running systems from source, so forcing everybody to pay for the extra (retail) DVD or to download all of the source packages is wasteful. Most people only download specific source packages, or sets of source packages, on an "as needed" basis to meet unique circumstances. Another difference is the boxed retail version includes licensed (proprietary) software that isn't available for download. hth & regards, Carl -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

WHERE TO FIND RPM is always a very confusing question to me. Before Carl gave me this source list, I always get confused on why various sources provide different collection of packages (now I am still confused but at least I don't need to worry about it). E.g. I never understand why in online installation sources there is package pwgen-2.05-10.i586.rpm but this package is never found on DVDs or CDROMs. There are a lot other examples of packages that only avaiable online, not just pwgen, another example is d4x-2.5.6-16.i586.rpm (all I am talking about 10.1 here) Carl's source list (but that is only for 10.0)
