Hello,
This is the first time I've seen this happen. I normaly logon VC1 and enter X
via
the startx command. Last night when I was finished using KDE and exited to the
VC the display was trashed. By this I mean there were vertical white and black
lines over the entire screen. I could not make out any of the information
displayed
on the screen. Tried Alt-F2, same problem. Tried "reset", no help. I went back
into X and everything appeared normal. Exit X to the VC and display trashed.
I finally shutdown and rebooted.
Has anyone seen this happen before?
Video Card is Matrix Millinum II.
X-server is default from SuSE 6.3 using SVGA.
Any idea what happened?
Thanks,
Terry

It happened to me when I used svgatextmode to select a text display other than
the standard VESA modes allowed by my Matrox Mystique (uses SVGA server, too).
It seems the Xserver sometimes can't restore the video registers properly.
When I went back to standard displays, the problem went away.
If it's an intermittent (or one time only) problem, some app probably overwrote
the memory location that stores the VC1 video settings.

Thanks for the reply. AFAIK this is a one time occurance. Hopefully it will not happen again. I just HATE rebooting. If it happens again I'll have to note what programs I ran while in X. Also, AFAIK I'm using whatever is standard for the text display (VC1). If I understand you correctly, when I exit the Xserver it has to restore the video registers. Is this what happens when I switch from X using ctrl-alt-F1? A couple of months ago I was running with kdm for graphical login. Had been up for over a week. When I wanted to play Quake II I did a ctrl-alt-F1 and to my horror the VC1 was trashed. I've not used kdm since then. Terry Mearl Danner wrote:

Might need to talk to someone more familiar with the X source code, but the
textmode status registers are saved when you enter the graphics mode and then
restored when you exit. I'm not sure how that's handled with a kdm login. I
also start up on VC1 and startx when I need the graphical.
