Hello to you all,
I'll start out by saying that I'm a complete, total newbie. I decided to give Linux a try because I happen to run windows98 and it crashes and/or freezes regularly, which can be quite annoying. Anyway, I installed the necessary packages yesterday and invoked SaX to configure the X Window System. Everything went fine untill I got to the 'Desktop' menu. There were no resolutions to choose from whatsoever - the list was completely empty. I have an Iiyama Vision Master Pro400 (17") and a Matrox Millenium card. I did notice that in the manual they mention PCI and ISA cards but not AGP. My card happens to be an AGP. Does SaX offer AGP or should I use xf86config? Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Please remember that I'm new at this (an understatement!), so don't get too complicated!

I just got my SiS6326 AGP card working under SuSe. I had to upgrade to the new XFree86.3.3.3.3 that is available on the suse ftp site. You need to get at least the shared rpm, the XF86 rpm, the vga16 rpm, and the svga rpm, also the newest sax rpm. I had to use the force command to install a few of them, rpm -U --force your.rpm Then run sax. My card needed the sw_cursor, and no_bit_blt options set in sax. Otherwise the cursor is a big square, and the fonts are missing, i.e. no printed information. I downloaded : ax-1_2-11_i386.rpm xextra-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xf86-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xfnt100-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xfntbig-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xfntscl-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xfsetup-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xlist xman-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xpm-3_4j-16_i386.rpm xshared-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xsvga-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xvga16-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm xxprt-3_3_3-3_i386.rpm just to be safe, and it works. I have a matrox Millenium G200 AGP card which I installed a couple of weeks ago. Wjhat I used for th eMatrox was the newest Xmatrox.rpm, the latest XF86Config prgram from SuSe, and the Xsvga server. I didn't use SaX to set my card up, I used xf86config, which is a little dated but quite effective Richard N. Hinton

Thanks a lot for your support, guys. I used xf86config to set the card up and it went pretty smoothly. Like they say in the manual, it looks kind of ptimitive but it did what it was supposed to do. There is one thing, though. Everything looks gigantic! The resolution is something around 340 X "another low number". I don't get this, I mean I did choose the right resolution settings during setup and "the resolution setting for the severely nearsighted among us" wasn't even an option. Ctrl + Alt + - won't change anything. What went wrong here? Please keep in mind that this is all very new to me.
Try posting your card info and what version of xf86 you are using. Many of the new cards ase only supported by the 3.3.3 ver of xfree. I have a diamond stealth agp that does the same and has one of the newer cirrus chips. I have been told that it does work with the newer 3.3.3 ver.

Check out the xfree web sight or the suse web sight and see if your card is on the list.

At 11:57 AM 12/23/1998 +0100, you wrote:
>>>>

Thanks a lot for your support, guys. Check out the xfree web sight or the suse web sight and see if your card is on the list.

My system came with the AGP card too. There was always a confilict between the AGP card and ethernet card. Never could get X work on the AGP card. Replaced it with an old ISA card and everything is fine. I find AGP good for only DVD movies and such. Not much use from office applications perspective. That opinon was true few months ago. I could be wrong now. Subba Rao subb3@ibm.net ============================================================== Disclaimer - I question and speak for myself. I have a Vision Master Pro 21 and an AGP Millenium II and Mine works. One little catch I ran into was that SaX misjugded the amount of memory on the card and the result was no usable resolutions. If SaX does not pick up your memory correctly, click the expert tab at the bottom of the card window and set it manually.
