[opensuse] trouble with Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT PCI-E graphics card
Hello everyone, Well, we've got this supposedly hot card (for full description see the link below) http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Games/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=A1350998 And it seems fine. However, the Nvidia driver for OpenSuSE 10.3, 32 bit (that's what we are trying to use it under) wouldn't pick it up and on top of that lspci lists it as an "inknown Nvidia device" or some such - in other words, it can't figure out the model number. I think the two problems may be related. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Boris. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm told it's a "solid card, not an 8800, but..."

You could have gotten an ASUS card that uses DDR3 RAM but is otherwise identical for the same price from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121097 Mine's arriving by UPS today, so I have more than a passing interest in this!
And it seems fine. I will let you know later this afternoon if this is a problem for the ASUS card. Perhaps the XFX engineers did something funky in the board identification circuitry or code. Or maybe the unit you got is just defective.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Boris.

I have an Asus Geforce 8600 GT PCI-E with 512MB DDR2 memory and it works excellent, no problems here with the Nvidia driver. nor with the 32bit and 64bit driver. running kernel 2.6.22.17-0.1-default Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks Ian. I take it lspci lists it properly too? Boris. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Am I reading that wrong, or does your card actually have 256 MB of RAM?

No my card has 512 MB RAM. When i open "NVIDIA X Server Settings", and then select "GPU 0- (Geforce 8600 GT)" i get the Graphics Card Information and there i can see that i have 512 MB. Just like on the box where the card was in when i bought it :) i don't understand the information below

My new card likewise shows 512 MB in the nVidia X Server Settings application.
i don't understand the information below
And likewise, I get this from "lspci -vvv" (when run as root, which gets
more information that in is available to non-privileged users). I don't
know why, but it, too, shows 256 MB, even though the card has 512 MB:

Region 1: Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Maybe they count it twice since its 64bit. My ATI Radion 1400 chipset in my Dell Laptop sold as a 256m reports itself as 256 meg with this line: Region 0: Memory at d0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M] But its 32bit, -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I can report that the upgrade was entirely, 100% smooth, seemless and uneventful. I shut down, swapped cards, started back up and everything work perfectly, but 3D apps were much nicer, especially SecondLife, which gave routinely 24+ FPS even in complex scenes. Celestia and Stellarium were also much improved.
