EMERGENCY-my hd does no more boot
Oh god, these Toshiba 10 GB drives really suck! Remember my long thread in April this year? I sent in the old drive and got the same back. GUESS WHAT HAPPENED???? I got the same type as new drive back. AND TODAY IT DIED AS WELL!!!! I cannot reboot (Linux says unrecoverable error) and hangs, I cannot even mount my windoze partition when I boot from CD. So what can I do now? I need my data on FAT32 partiotion back. (I have been SUCCESFULLY evacuating my Linux partitions the last couple of hours) ANY IDEAS WELCOME AND APPRECIATED! And: Has anyone reading this encountered problems with Toshiba Notebook harddrives as well? Best regards, writing this online at a friends place, off now I leave to try out more things... Look for OnTrack Data Recovery. It's a freebie that can recover data from almost dead harddrives. You will have to boot with a dos boot disk to use it but it can save your day. Google for OnTrack. Hope this helps some. Richard

The version there is a trial version only. I would love to have a LINUX program doing just that. Is there any? I found out that there are 3 physically damaged sectors. Now I have successfully tried out dd_rescue, and I can even mount the image. But almost all directories are missing now (due to the errors), so how can I get my files back? System: FAT32 wish: I would like to have a Linux program do the job. Or Dos/Win if necessary... -- +++ GMX - Mail, Messaging & more http://www.gmx.net +++ NEU: Mit GMX ins Internet. Scandisk in dos or windows. It should recover lost files and name them numerically - if the directory entries are lost, and there is no backup, not much more can be done. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
