The first thing I would so is download the binaries for the newest version of Star Office at openoffice.org. Version 6 is A LOT faster than previous versions and is not such a memory hog. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with either an athlon (although I have heard some rumors of problems) or a pentium III. I would certainly stay away from the pentium 4 for now.
