Well, as a matter of fact......:) I sent this to support yesterday. SYSTEM INFO: SuSE 7.1 XFree86 4.02-5 (update from SuSE site) KDE 2.01 AMD K6-2 500 mHz 256 MB SDRAM Jaton GeForce2 MX 32MB AGP (using drivers included w/ 7.1) Using stock kernels - mostly booting 2.4 This was a clean install of 7.1, not an upgrade. The only thing which has been updated since the install was Xfree86 4.02-5 which was installed using the rpm from the SuSE ftp site. In general it was a flawless install, and everything seems to work fine. EXCEPT for........ I boot into ASCII mode and then use "startx" to go into KDE. On frequent occasions when I log out of KDE, when I am returned to the console, all of the text on the screen is just symbols, with a few readable characters. I do sometimes see LF (line feed?) and CR (carriage return?) characters on the screen. I can type commands and they will be executed, but I can't read them! If I enter ctl + alt + F2 I can go login to another console screen which looks normal. But of course if I startx from that console, and then log out, I get garbage on that console too. This seems to happen if I have been in KDE for some period of time (more than just a few minutes). If I boot the machine, start KDE, then immediately log out, the console looks normal. This is EXTREMELY annoying to say the least! Any assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated. {UPDATE 3/2/01: I installed KDE 2.1 last night, and did not run into the problem. i remember having the same problem a couple of times, and that was on a 6.2 box, with KDE1.1 or 1.2. it never went so far that it happened on more than one console, though. i always thought it was kinda funny... :-) joost On Friday 02 March 2001 15:33, you wrote:

I knew this sort of problem after "cat"ing the wrong (binary) file to stdout. typing "reset" in the console will cure that. Odd, that this happens after quitting X. I have, however seen this happening I think with a weird video card I do not remember. ;-( Reason was -according to the SDB- the video mode setting in graphics mode. Did use "to much" (also the was suffucient) memory. Try another video mode with lesser RAM usage and see what happens. Juergen
