Yes it is normal (except for the bit about a dos prompt ;-). Depending on your kernel as well as the BIOS, you may be able to actually turn the power off when the shutdown completes. Avi landie@concentric.net wrote:

You did tell it to shutdown. Or did you want to poweroff? Poweroff needs a change to one of the files [just a couple of letters I think] but will only work with ATX systems. Very normal. Once run level 0 has been reached, your computer is now safe to turn off.
