Is anybody successfully using lifelines 3.0.21 with SuSE 8.1? I cannot get any lifelines (genealogy) postscript report files to print at all. Some data is sent to my printer but nothing is printed. Previous reports from lifelines version 3.0.19 are in PS-Adobe-3.0 format and still print OK but the newer version of lifelines is in PS-Adobe-2.0 EPSF-2.0 format. I can't see anything on the internet about this. What is EPSF anyway? Is this a SuSE problem, or is it lifelines I wonder. Any ideas anyone? -- Geoff Horn

Encapsulated PostScript File Quote from http://www.imagemontage.com/Docs/EPS.html: Encapsulated PostScript files are special PostScript programs with a special header describing the width and height of the image and how to place the image on the page. This header allows other applications to blindly include the image, and rotate, scale, place the image in the correct position of the application's document for printing or displaying on postscript device. =================================== You might try opening a document in StarOffice, then I)nsert->G)raphics->From file... and select the EPSF file you're trying to print. Might work..... Jim

Use "gs file.eps" to see error messages. Press <return> to continue and "quit" to quit gs. Unless you have a Postscript printer, gs is used as the RIP (raster image processor). Thus if gs cannot display the image correctly, other programs (gv, kghostview, lpr, ...) won't work too. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

I should have mentioned that both gv and gs display the EPSF file correctly. The printer is also happy with any other file format that I've tried - odd! I've tried re-installing the printer software as well, to no avail. P.S the Subject header is wrong: Should be "PS-Adobe-2.0 EPSF-1.2". Apologies. -- Geoff Horn

Try to convert these files to PS first and then print them. The probability it will help is rather low. $ convert file.eps PS2:file.ps $ lpr file.ps Convert is in ImageMagick. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

Well that works, thanks Alexandr. The quality is not quite so good though but it will get me gong for now. Where does the real problem lie? Is this problem something that SuSE should be informed about, I wonder. -- Geoff Horn
