[opensuse] OpenSuSE 11.4, kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-default and random lockups on HP DL360
Hello all, Into the last week i have some problems with a new upgraded system. That system is worked well for 1 week, then the last weekend it locked up. It is alive, terminal switching is working but if i write into the login and press enter, it locks up. From the external, the machine answers to the ping, but any service is present (syn-synack done), but no response (connection hangs). I am now thinking can be a problem of the new kernel, but i am not sure. Can be also an hardware problem, i dunno... For that cause i need an external opinion... What i can do to debug this? Any help is well accepted. I'm afraid I can't help you but I have also experienced this (or a very similar) problem 2 or 3 times since 11.4 came out. In my case I just used KDE programs when X locked up. I don't remember whether I could still move the mouse pointer around but clicking definitely did not work and neither did the keyboard - except I could switch to another terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1. There I could enter a login name but a password prompt did not appear. Ping worked, sshd did not respond. After a while I was not able to switch to a different terminal either. I had to reboot with a SysRq sequence. I only got this far. As I said, this occurs very rarely so I have no idea how to trigger or debug the problem. I cannot help either but can confirm that something is causing my, and my wife's, system to randomly lock up; the systems are 32-bit 11.4 with KDE and are desktop machines. Yesterday I had just logged in and within about 20 seconds after getting the wallpaper up on the screen the system simply froze - no keyboard, no mouse, only way out was, and is when this occurs, is to hit the reset button. But then it happened again while YaST2 was doing the Online updates. It was someway into downloading an rpm when the screen went black and everything was locked. Again it was the case for the reset button. And only 1/2 hour ago my wife had just picked up her mail, went to read the first message and her system simply froze. Another thing I noticed is that quite often after such a freeze trying to do a reboot does not work - the BIOS does not produce its normal "beep" when the computer is started. What I then have to do is to remove any power to the computer (switching off the power at the power supply unit), waiting for some 15 seconds, turning on the power and only then will the computer boot up again. This has made me wonder if the kernel is actually writing something to the BIOS (or some such). Very strange behaviour this, which never happened until, say, the beginning of this year or so. When the system freezes due to over heating CPU/memory /MB/Daughter boards the same symptoms appear. You might want to check the hardware.
It seems the problem is fixed adding "noacpi" to the kernel boot string, now is up from 2 days, and no signal of freeze.... I hope the problem is solved. For the others, with a similar problem, i say to try it. Little update, the problem seems solved, the server is running normally after adding "noacpi" at the kernel boot string.... Anyone else experienced the same problem? Apologies for the delayed response. Thanks for your observations. This was the first thing which came to mind but on both computers the CPUs are running at 39-40C and the mobos are at 23C; all fans working including the fans on the video cards. I even went and removed and then replaced all chips/cards from my wife's computer to make sure that the contacts were clean and sitting firmly - but the result is still the same. (As a matter of fact as I type this my wif'e computer locked up just as the wallpaper started to appear as she booted it up for the first time for the day.) But for the past couple of days there have been no dramas on either machine. Go figure :-) .
