I have to admit it, but I'm well pleased. Couple of weeks ago, inherited a TNT2 graphics card unfortunately XFree 3.3.6 just wasn't up to it, Quake2 had dodgy graphics and UT didn't run at all. So...... Downloaded XFree86 4.0.1 from xfree86.org - about 18meg in all but only took a couple of hours. copied my /usr/X11R6 to a backup and set about installing 4.0.1 All seemed to go well, until I re-started KDE, it asked me for new templates - I said yes,,,, word to the wise.. don't in future, it overwrites your settings.. anyway, tried to login as root, complete disaster, logged in to 'xsm' what the hell was that about ? panicked, re-installed 3.3.6 and went to bed. Next day (and thats another tip - if its getting too much, walk away from it and have a rest), went back to 4.0.1, sorted KDE out and copied over a .xsession file. As everyone else has, a crappy grey screen on KDM but will have a play with kdmrc later and as it happens - this was nothing to do with yast/sax2. Tonight, re-read Thomas's homepage and installed the nvidia kernel and driver Crikey, the damn thing works, I've got glorious quake2 and UT ticks along very nicely thank you. If anyone is stuck with an NVidia chipset and 3.3.6, take the plunge, go for 4.0.1, you get a -configure option with xf86config.. Excellent...... I'm having trouble installing OAS 4.0.7 under SuSE 6.4 I follow the installation instructions as said on the manual but I cant connect to the GUI Interface to administrate the site. Can some one tell me if I had to make strange links to the JRE or JDK, even where should I install them ? and what versions of them ? Please use - the suse-oracle@suse.com mailinglist - the webpages at http://www.suse.com/oracle/ -> KnowHow -> Install. Instructions Or do you just have the standard problem like so many others that Java is disabled by default in the SuSE supplied Netscape and therefore the Java applet to control OAS does not work.... -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ SuSE Linux AG, Nuernberg (Germany) SuSE Inc., Oakland, California (US) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

No idea what you are doing... there is no "it displayes it". It is a (Java) program, not an HTML page, so if it shows up it means it's running. If you can cover it up with another window, then you remove that covering window, and the applet is redrawn the Netscape Java environment is running fine. Next, look at the Netscape Java console. Anyway, don't know what you're doing without seeing it, I've never seen a problem other than that people had Java disabled. -- Michael Hasenstein http://www.suse.de/~mha/ SuSE Linux AG, Nuernberg (Germany) SuSE Inc., Oakland, California (US) -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
I have NVidia TNT2U on my graphics card. Games aren't my thing (well, they might be, I just don't have time anymore!). Is there any point in upgrading to XFree-4.0.1 if I don't want the 3D acceleration? Does it work significantly faster on normal desktop work?

If you read the design on xfree86.org you will see that the new design addresses much more than DRI.

I have read it. I don't need anything other than more speed. Hence the question (which still stands): Does it work significantly faster on normal desktop work? -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Yes, mine does. But it also depends on your card. I have a GeForce 256, and am using the NVidia drivers. Their is an overall improvement in performance. Will it improve netscape? No, netscape is a slow application and X will not help that.
