[opensuse] DLS connection in 11.4 after fresh DVD install
Hello: I tried to install yesterday openSUSE 11.4 from install DVD (downloaded from download.opensuse.org). Unfortunately a known bug hit me when I wanted to configure DSL connection: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668586 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=678396 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=679112 In short, when one wants to configure DSL in YaST2 a window comes up and says: "These packages need to be installed: linux-atm-lib" If you click ok/install an error message pops up: "The required packages are not installed. The configuration will be aborted. Try again?" If you click No, the configuration is canceled, if you click yes, the loop starts again. In https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=668586 comment 21 says: "Update released for: yast2-network, yast2-network-devel-doc Products: openSUSE 11.4 (i586, x86_64)" For me this implies that the issue is solved in the updated yast2-network package. Nope. I pulled down the required package and installed it manually. Now YaST2 instead of linux-atm-lib asks for libatm1 which is not on the DVD either, and configurator loops as before. Did I do something wrong or openSUSE? How can I fix this by not installing packages from other versions (11.2 or 11.3 eg)? In my opinion it is strange already that after a fresh DVD install a simple DSL connection can not be configured. This worked in every suse version I tried so far. Are you sure? It's part of the oss repo which AFAIK is everything that is on the DVD. http://software.opensuse.org/search?q=libatm1&baseproject=openSUSE%3A11.4&lang=de&exclude_debug=true confirms that as well.

Bug happens. And apparently those users that tested 11.4 before it was released do all use routers or let their modem dial-in automatically. :) Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The OSS repo is way larger than the DVD. Just checked, libatm1 was not on the DVD media. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ah, ok, so he has to download it. Yet would it not make sense to put it on the DVD because as seldom as this config might be, without internet one cannot download any missing packages for a working internet connection. :) Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I found libatm1 package at download.opensuse.org, and installed it similarly to the yast2-network package, now the DSL connection can be configured. Thank you all. Istvan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thank you all.

Please do file a bug to make sure the needed packages are included in 12.1 so you don't have this issue again! On the DVD the space issues are not so tight that a simple library has to be kicked out ... I suspect it is also rather unusual (therefore little used & less tested) to run DSL connections directly from openSUSE. Most connections are no doubt done with a dedicated ADSL router/modem. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (20.0°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

A openSUSE with convigured DSL as Istvan describes, is for me the only way to obtain reasonable speed. Otherwise requests wait 10 seconds for a answere. On some web pages this summarises easily to minutes and hence a unuseable internet. So a dedicated ADSL router/modem is no option. (osX, Windows and ubuntu work with the same dedicated modem. openSUSE and Fedora do'nt.) kind regards Kai-Uwe Behrmann -- developing for colour management www.behrmann.name + www.oyranos.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, it doesn't change anything much - my experience is the opposite of yours, I have never had any problems with openSUSE accessing the internet through a dedicated xDSL box (I've used zyxel, cisco, lancom). Wrt testing, I still think the numbers of users (and therefore testers) of this YaST DSL setup is quite limited. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (20.4°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I get that too with old routers which are not capable of IPv6. You can disable it though, unfortunately not for zypper though. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
