SuSE8.2 Getting gdlib to work.
Anyone got gdlib to work on SuSE8.2 ? I installed apache, PHP, gd and gd-devel, when using PHP to generate a image no error shows, but the image looks like a broken image in webbrowsers . Any ideas ? Best wishes Jan Nielsen
First question(s) for me on this partcular list but relatively experienced Linux user. Recently rebuilt an old PC ASUS A7N8X Deluxe (with builtin 3Com & Nvidia NICs) and AMD XP 2700+ CPU. Dual boot W2K & SuSE Linux 8.0 - vanilla install from CD distribution. 2.4.18-4GB kernel. Two problems; 1) boot.msg reports; <4> Detected 1293.093 MHz processor This has to be wrong! Should be 2166 MHz. W2K gets it right and the BIOS settings are OK. Any ideas? 2) Can't get either of the builtin NICs to work. Checked the archives and found a discussion back in Mar-Apr tied to 8.2 and Nvidia - which didn't seem to be definitive. However I want to get the 3Com NIC working. Rebuilt & installed 3Com driver - OK, but no joy. Turned on debug and in the boot.msg I get ifup (debug): CONFIG = eth0 INTERFACE = nointerface (returned 7) failed [Yes, I do have the "alias eth0 3c59x" entry in /etc/modules.conf.] This agrees with other bits of information, namely YAST2 "sees" both the 3Com and Nvidia NICs under the Hardware section "Network Devices" but "Network Interfaces" has only lo & sit0. Suggests to me there is nothing wrong with the NIC drivers. Does anyone have any more information or recommendations? I'm hoping the world has moved on from April and someone has a solution. Regards, Peter

Try booting with the failsafe kernel and see if things get better. There's been a lot of discussion about having to have ACPI turned off... and if it isn't, some NICs get messed up. Failsafe turns off a lot of things. An easy and quick

Win2K doesn't "get it" at all, it simply reads values from the BIOS. The linux kernel actively tries to detect the speed by reading timestamps while performing things. If you have windows installed on the machine, I would suggest that you download AMD's cpu "information display utility" at http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_2364,00... and see what speed it tells you the CPU is running at.

I had the same problem and I had to manually set my processor speed in the BIOS setup. W2K is lying about the speed the processor is running at.

First you need 'acpi=off' on the 'kernel' line in /boot/grub/menu.lst or a number of onboard features will not work. Second, the 3Com NIC is not a 'true' 3Com NIC. The driver is supposed to work but I managed to get it working for an hour before it stopped responding to ARPs. I gave up on it and I'm now using the NVidia NIC using the NForce driver from http://www.nvidia.com . Also, if you're planning on using the Serial ATA, you need to do 'hdparm -X66 - -d1' to get DMA working properly on any SATA drives (/dev/hd[ef]). Other combinations caused my machine to crash almost immediately. Now my SATA drive is amazingly fast (55 Mb/s). - -- James Oakley Engineering - SolutionInc Ltd. joakley@solutioninc.com http://www.solutioninc.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE+5J9D+FOexA3koIgRAm3wAJwLrz1PrlE8QWf9FPXxV9Pt3Pr9kgCfdMA0 BrRt56ftEieJhs47QPH25Ns= =FwqU -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
